New Case Caliber Folders?

Well, since this is the Traditional Forum, I don't reckon "pinned construction" is a negative.

I dunno. Whatever whets yer whistle. I kinda think Buck does this niche (working knives) better. But, they have been at it longer. Be interested to see what the follow-along from Case will be.

I didn't know these had been reviewed here before. I think I recognize the second poster... :D

I guess time will tell about these. I have to agree with Buck doing a good job with this type of inexpensive knife. I see a lot of the Ecolite (right series?) knives out on the job in back pockets. They are widely viewed as semi-disposables, but some of the guys have had their for a while.

I guess the difference for me is to to see a peanut with those scales. I can't imagine Buck putting camo plastic on a 301...

On the other hand, I may just be getting too set in my ways. After seeing the Buck 110 as the jobsite standard for decades, when I saw their plastic handled, pinned together knives in the blister packs at W@lmart, I thought that Buck was joining Schrade, Camillus and others in going out of business. I couldn't imagine what I saw. I couldn't imagine those knives being anything but a sign of bad news for Buck.

Hey, goes to show what I know!

That Case does look a Gerber LST. I really liked the Micarta LSTs. Gerber, or someone, needs to bring these back!
I thought the same thing about Buck, that they were on the way out. But, if you go the Buck Forum here on BF, you will see that Buck is doing very well. It's good to stay current. BTW, a just got a Buck 422 as a gift and I like my Case Mako a tad better. The Zytel feels and looks less plasticky.

Buck seems to be doing quite well. ( I am pleased for that! We don't need to lose another quality knife maker! ). And their line of knives that is comparable to the Caliber knives is doing very well according to the guys at the local Academy sporting goods store. I know a lot of my fellow nail bangers that carry an Ecolite Max (or equivalent) as a back pocket knife. They love 'em. The slender cases and the lightweight make them ideal for that. They think my RAT 1 and Kershaw JYDII are too big and heavy for an EDC work knife.

Even stodgy old companies like KABAR have a had several models of these knives out for years, and evidently they sell well as they keep coming out with new models.

Lordy I hope not, but... maybe I am just getting too old to change... Yikes!

Might have to try one of these rascals out to to make sure that isn't it!

lol! Never too old, Robert.
Buck has a web-special right now. Do it! If you don't like one of these new rascals, i'll buy it.

Just got my full size trapper in tan/grey. First impressions are F and F are good blade grind good, edge on the spay is good but the edge on the clip was crap (fixed up nicely now). Rides in the pocket like a dream! I always liked full size trappers but the bulk and weight in the pocket put me off (tried a belt sheath but that didn't really work for me either). Taking it to work tonight to beat on it a little and see how it holds up. So far thumbs up (mostly). Pics to come.

Great news! Enjoy that Case Light "pocket" knife.
Will you get another Caliber?
I have the HamRhead and love it too.

VERY impressed with this knife. My new work knife. Perfect walk and talk, cuts dirty cardboard and plastic like a champ. Grippy handle is easily accessible from the pocket and great grip with oily gloves on.

Okay, that's it. I'm warning you guys, keep on showing pics of those light weights, and I'm gonna get a caliber peanut just to see what it's all about!

Carl.

Case folks meaning folks that work for W.R. Case and Sons if your looking at this thread a good addition poped into my head last night and I nearly couldn't sleep thinking about it! How about a Case Caliber Scout? I wouldn't care if it was the reg. one or the one with pliers but either way it would be soooo coool!!!

Well, Case guys. Just to make comment on a comment up the line. Yes, Buck has tried some of this type of stuff and does some today. Most are overseas non-traditional Bucks for now, but in the past there was a Workman series of knives with sawcut plastic handles usually two or three blades and one was usually a carpet blade. Current 110 and 112 models have a 'odd' but ecological handle of paperstone. And have no brass bolsters. The Bucklite series of 112 sized knives is well thought of in the Buck world and is collected by many. They came in every 'plastic' color of handle imagined, even clear. Started with model 442 in black and hunter orange. Buck made one with red scales for scouts and blue for cubs. There is even a Royal Rangers version.

So, looking over this thread and the knives and considering you Case guys, I would say, *in the very least* these would make great Case kid knives and gift starter Case knives. *The light weight looks very desireable*.......*I am looking outside the box so have no idealism on this brand* and *I will add, yes I do so at times on my own brand*.........And companies are just trying to survive in todays world.......300

*Edited* to be clear to Case guys, I have no Case knives but I read your threads. I spend all I have to try to keep up in the Buck world.

See. ^ Demand is growing.
Let's see if Case answers the call.
300Bucks- Do you have a Case Caliber? Get one and you will change your opinion.

Moved a post about a Kershaw folder to the "what Traditional are you carrying today" thread. It was off target in this thread.

I wish Buck would get back to more of the lite series too. It seems like they kind of were pioneers with the "lite" type of folders and they seemed to be popular but then Buck seemed to get away from it. Now, a lot of companies use fiberglass reinforced nylon and I "think" others actually use the Valox ( I think that is the right term) which the original Bucklites were. Those Case Makos remind me a lot of the original bucklites. I've seen some of the Case knives in a store. I didn't look at them too close but they were cheaper.

jec88- I agree!
The like polymer on the Bucklites but the Zytel on the Case folders feels more grippy.
