New Case Swayback Jack - First Impressions

Personally, I use my knife alot for food tasks, that's why I would avoid a carbon steel blade...still, the CV Swayback Jack has caught my eye more than once, just like the Swayback Gent, so sooner or later I guess I will get one. As for size, especially if I will use it mainly for non food tasks, I'm 100% sure that I won't need any more than that.

Hi guys!

I don´t wanna open an extra thread. But thinking about buying a Swayback Gent, not Swayback Jack in Old red bone pocket worn. There are about 10 € different, but I want a singlebladed knife with a wharncliffe blade. What do you guys think? Or is the Swayback Jack better in the fit and carrying? Do any of you guys have this little fellow?

Looking forward for some information.

Kind regards
Andi

Andi,

I don't have a Swayback Gent but I have been looking at that same model myself.

In fact, if it's the one for $55.90 plus $4.00 shipping you better snatch it up before I do! Just kidding really. My funds are set aside for other endeavors but I have been eyeballing that one and I like it a lot.

I went with the Gent instead of the Jack simply due to the Gent is slightly thinner (due to only having a single blade). I'd also recommend the Tony Bose collaboration over the straight Case. The F/F just 'seems' to be better on the Bose - IMO.

For the past couple of months I have been sucking in everything there is to find about the SBJ. I hope I can get one for Christmas. I`ve been saving up (lots of bills lately), but it`s not enough yet. I`ll be getting the SBJ just like the one in this thread. CV n all, and I`m going to let Knifeworks engrave my initials. I found the Case SS Cayenne Trapper too big to edc for me, so the SBJ and the Peanut should be perfect.

Post more pictures! :D

Here ya go - she's kind of a photo whore

My next case will probably be a Bose backpocket in g10 if I can get over the tru-sharp steel.

i was looking at the chestnut bone bose /case sbj on the net when my sister rang me to see what i want for xmas(she drew me in the secret santa).
i pounced. sent her the link .it is now in the hands of the knife gods.
cheers

Humppa,
I have both the gent and jack. I thought that the gent would be good for dress clothes and the jack good for edc. HAVE to say JACK all the way! the gent was too thin for me and the jack was still small enough for dress. Course i use a trapper in my side business so either one feels small compared to that guy. SBJ is great for normal work but i use the trapper for the heavy duty stuff.

I don't see the issue unless you just really don't like slightly discolored blades...

Hell, it would probably take years to develop a patina if you just wiped it off immediately after cutting food. At work I would peel/slice acidic fruit regularly, as well as some meats/cheeses and it stayed shiny until I started leaving it with gunk on the blade while I ate, because I actually wanted tosee patina form.... And even then it was very light discoloration.

Love the SBJ, been in my pocket every day for months. Kicked the modern folders out awhile back...

I just got my first SBJ yesterday and I am impressed. I picked up a damascus and stag model here on the exchange and it is one of the first knives my wife actually likes. Her cousin, who loves my collection, played with it for about 1/2 hour at supper. We all love the stag and the blades are gorgeous with excellent swedging. The backsprings are all flush in all three positions, both blades. I don't have any other new slipjoints with flush joints open, closed and half. Plus the blades sit on the springs absolutely perfectly. I have been reading on the fit and finish on these for years and I am totally blown away. Oh, and hair popping sharp out of the box to boot.

It might be very personal, but I wouldn't choose a carbon steel blade in a knife meant for food tasks. Not for the knife, but for the food.
I'm not the least worried about a patina (in fact, many knives look even better with a nice patina), but, unfortunately, carbon steel tends to give a metallic taste to certain foods (fruit, for example) that I don't really like.
I do like the SBJ. If I needed a knife for non food tasks, a carbon steel wharncliffe blade of that size would probably be my first choice. And that's why the CV Swayback Gent keeps calling me...

I'm a fan!

Those Damascus stag ones are sweet - someday I'll add on of those with the swirly steel.

Fausto I can understand where your coming from - it's a little like eating tomato sauce that was cooked in an unlined pan - the metal is there a little.

Like a well seasoned pan though the patina does a pretty good job of protecting your food from the reactive metal once it's formed

I've found the main wharnie blade to have to perfect blade geometry for freehand sharpening also Case's CV IMO takes an incredible patina with age I much prefer the color of a well patina'd carbon steel blade to a super shiny stainless blade however that is just personel preferance .

I've had my Case Sway Back (chestnut CV) for about a month now...simply a wonderful knife!

A quick life cycle check in.

Hasn't left my pocket in over two weeks. Patina is coming along nicely but you can see I don't use the pen blade too much...maybe it's time for a backpocket or a gent?

Thanks for the replies, you guys!

But unfortunatelly your replies came too late ;) I ordered the SBG about three weeks ago. Now it´s short before getting the delivery. I´m looking forward getting this little guy. Maybe it´s too thin, maybe not. The Sway Back Gent looks like a good EDC for office works. I ordered mine in Pocket Worn Red Bone.

Kind regards
Andi
