New Cold Steel DVD's

I think it's hilarious all the hate he generates in some people. At least he generates feeling in people, whether it's it's negative or not.He still has some knives that I will most likely buy.

I have a philosophy about people like Lynn C. Thompson:

The bigger the booming sound that a drum makes, the more hollow space with air you will find inside.

That being said, I have no doubt that Thompson is at least a capable fighter. Like him or not, he's been successful in his business. Who knows, maybe being a troll of the knife world is part of his business strategy. You can't deny that it drums up discussion and controversy.

What is the objectionable content?
Cutting Pigs?

I'd say that, plus he openly teaches knife fighting and advocates some of his knives as self defense weapons.

Watched these videos on Youtube. I actually enjoy them a lot. They're entertaining, and show the product in use. Sure I'm not going to chop an assortment of meat with my knives (except maybe the kitchen ones), but they do a good job of making it entertaining.

I'm surprised that Cold Steel is the only knife company taking an aggressive approach in marketing and utilizing social media outlets as well. Hey, more exposure to them I say.

I don't think it's unusual that only Cold Steel does this.

As an example, think about it in terms of a car company. How different might the public opinion of a car company be if all of their advertisements and promotional materials were filmed on hand-helds, with machine rails guiding cars into walls, pit traps, hazards, and other vehicles? Volvo used to do this in the 80s, but it isn't their focus now, and it certainly isn't the way most car companies market their vehicles. Usually, you just see a sedan or an SUV roaring down a mountain road or sun-bathed seascape.

I think marketing approaches depend on the social and political climate. America is still deeply immersed in a long and bloody conflict in the Middle East, so some people won't respond positively to graphic depictions of violence. Other people think that overt demonstrations are boastful or unprofessional - they prefer reputation and word-of-mouth over spectacle.

The reasons why marketing can be successful or unsuccessful are numerous and much too complicated to really be glossed over here without information or statistics to support speculation. But if the technique helps Cold Steel to sell knives, then you can bet your boots they'll stick to it.

The videos are pretty good usually IMO. :D

It's good they take the time to make them and out them out there for everyone to see. :)

They show that people really can use their knives.
i guess ive always been put off by a company that markets their knives this way. a good knife should sell itself and not need a video of some fella punishing them in a controlled environment. ive always wondered how many takes is needed to get the right footage for these dvds

I read many years ago in SOF magazine, to see if your knife was really adequate for self defense, to stuff denin pants with straw or rags and slap iron to it.

My knives bounced/skidded right off - which caused me to re-evaluate the edges and the style of knives that I'd thought were suitable fighters.

Thompson loads jeans, leather sleeves etc with raw beef - and slices it. I think that's what he's illustrating - what it would do to a man's body parts when clothed in such materials.

Well at least it won't void the warranty if you really use their knives for something other than slicing cheese and cleaning your fingernails unlike some other companies out there. ;)

They expect people to use them and use them hard and they stand behind their products 100%.

I don't care what anyone thinks, but a Company that really stands behind their product will always get my Business. :D ;)

Busse, Strider, Cold Steel, HI, and ZT.

Actually they state at the beginning of their videos that the tests they perform are a gross abuse of the knives, and damage resulting from such isn't covered by warranty. :o

That's ok though--most companies out there wouldn't cover that sort of abuse either. :)

Believe me they do cover it, I know they do. ;)

They will cover their products.

Most other companies (maybe there's a couple) can't compete with Cold Steel's products. C'mon, bending blades with a pipe to 45* and even 90* without snapping the blades and hanging 100's of pounds off the lanyard holes and not causing lock failures. If they could they would.

Call me naive but I think that most of Cold Steel's offerings are pretty darn tough knives and priced fairly from most dealers.

I only own 5 CS knives but they're excellent and not bank breakers either. :)

i know for a fact that KaBar/Becker will cover their knives above and beyond most companies, as will Buck. THAT is why i buy them.

I could care less how far you can bend the knife without it breaking, it has no real world value to me. I own a few CS knives and they are by far the lesser of quality compared to other knives, even similarly priced ones. I bought one of their machetes last summer, used it once and the edge was all folded over. Maybe they do have some good product but honestly I don't see myself buying any more of their knives. And when I am in the market for another sword theirs aren't even in the top 5 of companies I would consider dealing with.

And for me, if you are going to show the quality of your product, learn how to use it correctly. The way they "step, step, step, chop" with their samurai swords is comical to say the least.

For reference, Cold Steel doesn't make their own machetes. Lasher Tools of South Africa makes them. ;)

Oh wow you really bought a high dollar item there......

Don't expect too much for what $15 or $20 or so......

With that big money investment you made I am sure you have a point.....

Soft thin steel with thin edges = Rolled edges once in awhile.

Machetes are made out of softer steel to make them tougher so cutting hard stuff will roll the edge. ;)

you obviously missed the part where I said i Have "a few knives" from them. And if you watch the dvd they talk about that cheap machette I bought, and it is supposed to have some quality...I mean it does carry the CS name does it not? I didn't buy them for actual cutting or I would have bought a more expensive one...i wanted the weight for combat training purposed, so it all worked out...

As with all things in life you really do get what you pay for in the end. ;)

Like other knife companies Cold Steel also has low end, med and high end blades.

Don't expect to spend $20 on something and have it perform like a $500 product.
