New Collaboration with JK Knives

Okay ladies and gents, John and I have been working to bring you a great service that I'm pretty pumped about. We're still getting the details worked out on the when and how, but it's going to be a great value for you. If you're new to JK knives or have been spying something new but haven't wanted to go all-in on it, I think you're going to like this idea.

This... is going to be sweet. I hope many who have been following our collaboration take full advantage of this inexpensive, and in some cases free, service.
Please don't leave us in the dark, tell us more.;)

But where's the fun in that, my friend :p? We could offer little tid bits and teasers over the next couple months and weeks, but we can't disclose everything as we still need to get adequate details for the bigger release later, because I'm a bit particular with details. Have you seen my forum posts or PM's? Brevity is not my gift :D.

I for one really like the straight back pointy blade, just don't know if I like the grind. I guess time will tell unless you want to give up a little more information.

Straight back point - full flat grind  (among others) Never did care for scandi.

The knife photo posted by @cbach8tw, however, is all good to my way of thinking.

Good for you and John, JK Knives JK Knives to be working together bikerector bikerector . I expect we will see some great knives.

On the grind, is it because of the saber grind or do you just prefer a full flat grind? I'm considered a convex but being that it's not a wide blade, the saber flat would add strength to it. I think it could be a nicer turkey carver with the thinner grinds like the full flat.

RayseM RayseM the last picture was intended to be a saber. I'm not sure how high we could make it but would you prefer full flat or even just a high saber? With what I've seen from John, I actually really like the full convex grind but the lines of saber grinds are prettier while still being functional, for something aimed at more than just me. Might be something I'll have to test out when we start getting some working blades to test. It should be a heck of a slicer at only 1/8" thick still in any grind but scandi.

I only like scandi for wood working, but love it for wood. Any other use gets a different grind, IMO. As mentioned, I really have been enjoying the convex stuff from John and I will have a better feel for how slicey it can be with the 3/32" thick Canadian belt knife I received earlier this week.

My preference for kitchen work would be full flat but as a camping knife high saber is pretty and as you note - a
more robust blade even when as thin.

Spent a few hours tonight carving up some rough wood handles from scrap cedar again to get an idea of what the drawing would feel like in hand. So far, I like it. Might favor a chopper a little more than a nimble knife so I'll have the think it over a little bit but nearly ready to do this with pre-cut and sized basswood boards for a more refined prototype to handle for a while and send around for some people to put their hands on it.

Very roomy with a front and back hand position for most people, 1 hand position if you have bear paws for hands. After carving it and handling it, it's a lot more like a hudson bay handle with a pinky choil than the balled end like a traditional French trade knife. Much of that is due to the cedar scraps only being that tall. They're not pretty but they give me an idea of what the design feels like in hand. The blade is only carved in so that it looks like a knife.

Can I get in on a pass around, it looks like it will happen in the middle of winter but with your designs it would be fun to use in the kitchen.

Absolutely, can you email me at ? I have 5 other people on my list currently.

Alright, first service announcement. I will be offering free re-sharpening on all JK made knives. I cover return shipping if you cover shipping to me. I will be acquiring a guided sharpener and getting good with it, but I currently free-hand sharpen with pretty decent results. I'm not going to get a polished edge on it that's what you like, it is free afterall, but it will be shaving sharp.

I am looking at getting some of the lower grit DMT stones, or some other ceramic, in order to work towards being able to get the really nice edges but right now an extra fine DMT stone is the most refined I can do, which is usually enough to make it look like there is no scratch pattern. I suspect most people with JK knives are already adequate at sharpening but if you don't have the time or have dulled several knives and want them all touched up, I can help.

For now, contact me via PM or email at and we can work this out. I plan to have the guided sharpener and be practices up on it by 2020, but I can touch up any JK knife right now with what I'm already equipped with.

Re-profiling will be an option when I get the guided sharpener as I don't have the time for that type of task at the moment with the tools I have on hand.

Ordered a bunch of baryonyx stones today to round out what I can do freehand and then a buddy worked out a deal to get me a guided sharpener, so I should be all set for pretty much any sharpening task by next week. Except for convex edge bevels. I'm not quite there yet for resetting those, only working them with a strop and compound on my personal knives. Axes I've mostly figured out but they're a different animal.

I plan to get a little sharpening workshop put together to dedicate a small area to this service and to prepare for another service that I plan to offer next year that I'm still excited about, but will continue to hold that information. That special service will require maintenance of a fleet knives, as a small hint.

The picture's not glamorous, so I'm not going to post it, but John has the knives ground and has the handle blocks fitted as of today. I'm hoping to see the final product pictures within a day or two. These things are looking pretty sweet with the grinds on them.

Probably tomorrow

Side topic: I plan to steal an idea from Fiddleback Forge's Friday sales and put 10% of my profits from my designs to a charity of my choosing. I'm leaning towards a military related charity focusing on mental illness, but I'm also looking into a wilderness/outdoors related advocacy group. Maybe both.

My intents as a business person have always been to use my positions to better people's lives, and this is one way to do that. I hope to do it more directly as a leader of people as a business owner or senior leader of someone else's business, in the long run (currently do this as a low-level manage as an employee of someone else).

I will announce where I will give as I get closer to being able to have something to sell to y'all. I get more and more excited to work with John and customers as my business plan continues to come together, even if it's in the current small capacity on blade forums.

Side, side note: <--Got a new membership level so I can properly support BF and offer services to the BF community :)
