New Condor Bushlore

I have an old style but am going to get one of the newer ones also. Can't go wrong for $25.

I've got some photos of that micarta Bushlore but they'll take a while to upload. Expect them tomorrow! :)

I got a reply by email back today from someone at Condor, to a question about the sheaths and they say it's the same sheath.

Pics as promised! :D:thumbup:

Thanks man, looks good and I'm liking scandis lately. I like that it is 1075, it's a good tough steel, do you know what the RC is?

RC should be in the 56-58 range, and sharpens to a screaming edge super easily.

Contrary to Joe's original intent the pieces I have a very small microbevel to them, so they aren't quite a true scandi out of the box, but it shouldn't take much elbow grease to get them there if you so desire. I'd leave it though--I've found that the thin convex on my Rodan cuts wood almost as well as a freshly-sharpened Mora and doesn't chip or roll when I beat the s*** out of it. :p:thumbup:

Doesn't it though? Feels great too. I haven't come across a knife that made me really want it in a while. I think this is one of those.

That RC, with 57 being optimal, sounds great for my uses. I prefer them not to be so hard that in-the-field sharpening is a pain.

As for the micro-bevel, I have always modified the edge of any knife I have kept around for long so I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it :)

It also means that if you baton through a knot your edge doesn't chip out!:p Seriously, I don't know what Imacasa/Condor does with their heat treatment, but their knives take a stupid sharp edge with just a few strokes from a fine DMT diafold. Easiest sharpening field blades I've ever used, which is saying something.

Thanks for the review and the pics. I do like the look if this knife with the Micarta scales. I've read about the older models having bad grinds and the blades being duller than a butterknife, so it is safe to say that these newer Bushlores are more consistant in quality/contruction?

If the one I have is any indication, YES!

MUCH more consistent, and the edges on all the ones I received are hair-shaving out of the box. I've got wooden-handled ones en-route to replace the 2010 ones they accidentally sent me, and I'll post some pics when they arrive. :)

Well..... I ordered a Condor Bushlore with wood handles from knifeworks (they have the 2011 model pictured on their site), BUT, instead what I received today was the old model. I can see why people disliked it with it's usless inch-long ricasso. Despite the blade's thickness mine actually came with a reasonable edge out of the box. Nowhere near as sharp as I'd like it to be, but at least it wasn't as dull as a butterknife. Interestingly, the box has a QC sticker inside dated August 2010 which is something I would have never expected in a knife costing as low as this one does.

I'm disappointed that I didn't receive the 2011 model pictured on knifeworks' site, but I just don't feel like making a big issue over a $27 knife and have to deal with the hassles of returning it, etc... I did shoot them an email just to let them know that what I got was not exactly the same knife pictured on their site, so in case anyone is thinking of buying a Bushlore from knifework may want to call them to make sure what they got is the current model.

I'll be definitely ordering a micarta handled one from baryonyx when I get paid next.

For what it's worth the wooden handled Bushlores I initially received were all "improved" 2010 stock--they weren't as bad as early runs (they looked quite clean, in fact) but they were still too broad of a bevel, were in thick stock, and the ricasso was still present. It WAS a big enough of a problem for me that I sent them back for replacement with 2011 stock (which they were supposed to have sent me--I specified it). The replacements should be shipping out this week sometime, so they should be in my hands about a week from then. The micarta is really something jaw-dropping though. Even though it's more expensive than the wood, it's still dirt cheap for what it is!:thumbup:

Mine was ordered from Knifeworks as well, and received the new version. I did specify that I was looking for the new version, so it seems their customer service was looking out. If I were them, and maybe 'stuck' with a mixed stock of new and old, I'd advertise them as two separate items. Undoubtedly some shoppers would prefer the older, thicker version. Not too many quarter-inch-thick blades out there...
