New Condor Bushlore

Both great knives with different approaches. The 5" strikes me as resembling a leuku, and would be better suited to dressing game with the more rounded tip geometry, and the Bushlore is better at fine tip work and piercing/drilling because of the more acute point which is along the center line of the blade. :)

So, is it safe to say that the Micarta version comes with a black sheath and the Wood handle comes with a brown sheath? I would like to get the micarta with a brown sheath. I guess I'll just have to buy both.

Yup! You won't be sorry though! :D If you really just want a brown sheath you might be able to arrange with Condor to swap them out.

Could I get some feedback on sharpening the knife.

I got one a good couple of months ago.
I am very impressed.
I do not care about the cost, that is not what makes it such an interesting knife.

It is huge!
A wide leaf shaped blade and a long contoured handle
It feel like a small machete to me
But it balances at the index finger rest of the handle
This means it is extemely light in the hand, and I can 'twirl' the knife between my index finger and thumb
So I have a high degree of control
I will give Condor the kudos as this being designed
Excellent!

I do not know what the edge grind can be called
But blunt comes to mind
Not a scandi, because the 'secondary' bevel was much too deep
I near wore out a 250 Waterstone trying to get down to a full scandi grind
It would not grind down!!
So I got out my DMT Aligner and put a full 20 degree bevel from x course to x fine
It is now sharp
I will let it develop in to a convex edge by sloppy field sharpening

So the question is
How sharp was the knife
And was it scandi or saber?
Do did folk bring it to very sharp

Thanks

It's intended to be a scandi with convex microbevel. Sounds like the secondary on yours was kind of flubbed though! They're usually at least paper-slicing sharp from the factory, and often dry-shaving sharp.

I just got both the Micarta and Wood today. The first thing I noticed was the micarta seemed to have a much better finish. The wood was not rough, but the rivets and lanyard holes were not that good at all. Some protrusion on the back rivet and the lanyard tube had obvious gaps. Plus, there was a knot/blemish in the wood next to one of the rivets. The tang was not as flush with the wood as it was on the Micarta. The Micarta was perfectly flush and all rivets very flush. There were not gaps between the scales and tang on either model.

Now interesting enough the wood blade was noticeable longer than the micarta version. Neither blade is very sharp. Not a big deal really. If I wasn't going to keep the convex it would take just seconds on something like a sharpmaker. These are my first convex and will use them to practice.

Also, the micarta handle is is thicker than the wood and very noticeable when going in and out of the sheath. However, it feels much nicer in the hand. The weight difference is also very noticeable. Overall I am very glad I got the micarta version. The extra weight is nice and the finish is much better.

Now the questions becomes do I like the Micarta in the black sheath or the brown sheath more.

Well it not flubbed now lol
Sharp now...

Do all the bushlores balance at the indent of the handle
or it is my luck?
If the mircata handles are heavier do you loose the balance point?

I agree! I bought the original also and it is by far the most useless knife in my collection. I am glad they changed their design. Thanks for posting.

The finish on the micarta pieces does tend to be better than the wood, as a whole, but your wood-handled one should be in much better shape than it is! That gap around the lanyard hole is pretty huge! You might be able to fix it by flaring it more, though. Do you have a threaded target point for archery lying around? If so that might be big enough to do the trick. If you can't figure out a DIY solution, Condor will exchange that for ya'.

Micarta ones balance a little further back, but I find the balance most pleasing on them as compared to the wood. The wood is no slouch, for sure, and is clearly the most popular model of the two...but the micarta turns a great knife into a FANTASTIC one. :D

Has anyone done any fun mods to their bushlore? Different grinds? New scales? Jibbing on the spine? Custom sheaths?

I am in the process of doing a full height convex by hand; it looks hideous right now and is taking forever, but I think it will be worth it!
I was also thinking about practicing epoxy cord wrapped handles so I could do that to the Bushlore when, or if , I were to get good enough.

I need to get the new Condor Bushlore! I have two of the first gens, one stock one modded.
