New CPM Steel: Magnamax?

It's very much appreciated. Me and all the future knives I will have in these awesome steels thank you Larrin.

I am interested for sure. Hoping for some stainless k390, or really tough and higher hrc s90v. Either way you wanna look at it. These are some wild times we're in. The golden years of pocket knives

I think it makes a lot of sense.

The high toughness stainless steel niche is already filled with AEB-L.

Magnacut is in the medium toughness and medium abrasion resistance zone in the middle.

So I think this new alloy will attack S90V as a tougher alternative for a very high abrasion resistant stainless steel.

Well it didn't happen on its own Larrin Larrin has been on Bladeforums for over 20 years now.

We basically have an "inside guy" working in the steel industry.

He grew up around knives. He was obsessed about knife steel long before any of us cared.

Now you have somebody who is basically the most brilliant mind in the knife steel industry that has an intimate understanding of how the actual chemistry works and how to bend it to his will.

We often see rapid progress flow so freely in every industry in the modern world it's often marginalized when it innovation comes.

There is a belief for many that things will naturally just get better and better on there own without any need great inventors like in the past.

For many, things are just expected to appear from thin air.

However, I strongly feel that without Larrin, we would not see such innovation; the industry wasn't even moving in the direction he was showing it could go.

When MagnaCut was released I've seen many people admire or disparage Larrin I guess there's lot and lots of steel experts.

Well, what we don't see is it took the right person grown in a unique environment well over 20 years to create the metallurgist we see today and now we all get to enjoy the fruits of his passion.

This should be the preface of the next book titled "21st century steel"....😉

I see. Totally fair to speculate on your point - for those of us that have been included in the beta test group, we were required to sign NDA’s for this, so until the Powers That Be sign off in it, it’s bad form for us to be tattlin’. 😉
Found the hint. Larrin posted this chart with "MagnaWear" on his Patreon in January:

He also said during a Q&A that the next step with MagnaCut would be to increase or decrease the amount of vanadium. You just gotta connect the dots, man.

If that's true at all, this is going to be very exciting. I can't see the bottom of the chart but it looks like it's possibly 65 hrc capable and around k390/s90v wear. I would love to see the edge stability/wear resistance of my tool steels while never getting a tiny bit of rust. That would make an awesome everything knife. Hunting knife. Fishing knife. Boxes breakdown knife

Sir, I am unaware of any such activity or operation... nor would I be disposed to discuss such an operation if it did in fact exist, sir.

I thought the sarcasm was obvious enough. I was taking a jab at everyone who already pretends Magnacut made everything else obsolete.
lol I picked up what you put down, but I love how BUCK 420HC will just keep on chugging along.

That knife with the Elk... Awesome.

Now that so many major manufacturers are deeply invested in Magnacut I'll be curious to see how many jump the gun to the latest and greatest hotness as soon as it becomes available.

I understand that knife manufacturers work with different steels all the time and are prepared to do so, but I don't think I've ever seen the entire market jump to a single new alloy like they did with Magnacut. If the selling point of the new stuff is better edge retention at the cost of some toughness it sounds perfectly targeted at the pocket jewelry social media crowd who largely buy the most expensive knives.

Confirmation from Devin Thomas that it's a high wear resistance stainless steel:

I can totally understand the speculation, but the fact is that all of us, including Devin, are working with a small melt of a prototype alloy which hasn’t even had its chemistry finalized. That’s why we keep applying the word ‘prototype’ when discussing it. 😉

Also, ALL of us are still under the terms of the NDA, so divulging anything beyond that is exclusively the business of Larrin Larrin nsm nsm and the gang at Crucible Steel.

Still, I applaud your digging. It’s fun stuff!

They all jumped to CPM Magnacut because it made sense to. Whether you want to get caught up in the ‘pocket jewelry’ energy or not is irrelevant, to those of us looking to make better knives. Having more - and better - options for various applications, both specific and general, is what this is all about. It’s not and has never been about one alloy that will grossly surpass all others in performance, it’s about having the right options for the task at hand. I’ve always loved the sleek lines and performance of the classic air-cooled Porsche 911 series, but they are a spectacularly bad choice for hauling four tons of crushed stone.

I'm all for more and better options, but everyone jumping on the bandwagon of one "latest and greatest" steel works against that. If you had to haul tons of crushed stone and had nothing but various sports cars to choose from you'd be out of luck. Granted in this analogy Magnacut is probably an SUV that can just as comfortably haul the family OR a dump trailer, but for the guy that wanted to run laps at the track that wouldn't be the most appealing choice either. Variety is good. All-around/universal solutions can also be good.

I'm not trying to bash anyone. I quite enjoy Magnacut and have several knives made of it. I also own and enjoy knives with S30V, S35VN, M390, Elmax, Cruwear, 154CM, and 1095 to name a few. Someday in the future I'll own a knife made out of the new Magna*** too.

Just making an observation about Magnacut rapidly taking over the market and curiosity about whether Larrin's new flavor will do the same or if it will bring some variety back into market. For quite a while now it's more of a surprise when a new model is announced that won't be Magnacut, and like I said, I enjoy variety.
