New CRKT knives.

Sounds like they're getting crappier by the year. AUS-4? What's that have? 25% carbon? I second the :barf: .

"A.G. Russell™ One Hand Knife™
This is the A. G. Russell "One Hand Knife?" in its third version. In one version after another we find our designs copied by people who go to China; either Taiwan, Red China or Hong Kong, for cheaper modifications of our design work. There are even a tiny few who will spend the money for superior work in Japan or the U.S., but even these companies use lower quality steels such as some version of 420, AUS-6 or even AUS-4."

"Consider these examples: A mechanic who gives his work knife hard daily use, in contact with all types of solvents and moisture, will benefit from the durability, stain resistance and ease of sharpening found in 420J2 or AUS 4 steel. In contrast, the buyer of a CRKT Ultima or Alaska Pro Hunter expects a higher alloy steels, such as 1.4116 or AUS 8, with their exceptional combination of hardness and stain resistance. "

yep, a similar steel to 420, the fantasy knife steel. as long as your willing to costantly sharpen/steel, and you like the design.... and its a really low price  they might be decent knives...

The only one I like anymore is the
M16
The M21 might be worth checking out.

Why the heck can't they make them so you can move the clip L/R tu/td? How hard could it be to drill and thread a few more holes?

Check out What's New, the Side Hawg: "The Side Hawg is both minimal and functional. It is one piece of 420J2 stainless steel, skeletonized with CNC chamfered edges and a single side grind. The deeply curved modified drop point blade has a 1.625” Razor-Sharp cutting edge. "

Razor-Sharp.

But for how long?

What's their target market? It must be mall cutlery stores. I betcha the people behind the counter at the mall cutlery shops can really sell the heck out of these knives for MSRP. They've got the mall-ninja "NEAT-O" factor.

I used to (10 years ago) consider CRKT above Kershaw and Buck in quality for the money. But at a time when Kershaw and Buck are getting more serious, CRKT seems to be getting less. Are they trying to replace the Schrade as the new company to fill the spot between United Cutlery and Buck?

Looks like if I want a CRKT model I better get it before they get the 420j2's in the pipeline. WTF is CRKT thinking they just went from good knives at great prices to frost cutlery crap, nobodys gonna wanna pay those prices for 420j2.

The slidesharp looks idiot proof
The Merlin folding knife sheath, is the blade held partially open? If so, NO WAY. First, there goes my lock back springs, second, if you fall..

Sure looks like it. Ew!

As far as I know, on my M16/M21 models the 420J2 just applies to the lower price point zytel handled M16 series and the F4. The aluminum and titanium handled models still have AUS8.

I have to say that I am very disappointed as well. If anyone searches my posts I have always been an advocate of Bang for the Buck and have praised CRKT many times in the past.

What we are seeing is a common business practice, increase profit by taking something out of the product but not lowering the price. Some Dog Food manufacturers did this several years ago by going from 50lb bags to 47.5lb bags, yet charging the same price. I remember some lame excuse about being able to sell to countries that use the Metric system... :barf:

CRKT used to be about Quality on a budget, good using knives with flare. It seems now they are much more concerned with Flash and wild designs than functionality,...they aspire to be a refined cousin of United Cutlery or Tomahawk Brand. This kind of practice I think is better fitted to capturing the dollar of the impulse buying Mall Ninja and closes the door on those who might be a knowledgable repeat buyer.

I'm sad to see this turn of events as I think it greatly reduces the field of good affordable knives for the knowledgable collector/user who is also price conscious.

Hillbillenigma,
Not sure what you are so upset about.
I'm just talking about the M16/M21 models, not the rest of the line up. The zytel (Z) models have always gotten beat up for using AUS6M steel. Those are the models that will be using the 420J2 steel. All the rest will still be using AUS8. Who knows what else might be happening in the future. :)
From looking at the great new CRKT catalogs I received the other day, looks like this holds true for the whole lineup.

MelancholyMutt, give me time. At least there is a spearpoint recurve version now :)

I'm sure you've heard it a million times, but I think plain edged non-tanto M-16/21 variants would sell like hotcakes if available in a premium steel like 154cm or a VG-10.
