New CRKT knives.

I think most of the knife consumers out there is not going to know the difference between 420, aus8, 440C or A2 tool steel. Marketing has deemed that price is more important than performance
That's true... but my fear is that when people buy CRKT and find that they go dull faster than Buck or Schrade or Gerber... they will wonder why they don't just buy an off brand...

Guys, I'm definitely not happy with CRKT downgrading their steel, but AUS-4 is not 420J2.
According to their website, AUS-4 ingredients include about triple the amount of carbon 420J2 has.

I see that AUS 6 is gone from CRKT's steel chart. So, I assume that means none of their knives are being manufactured with AUS 6 any longer.

I'm glad I got my Hammond Cruiser last year; very grippy knife and makes me feel a little safer whilst walking at night down dark streets.

They probably replaced it with 440A.

been wondering about CRKT ever since they dropped the Crawford Falcon from the line. (it is not listed on the site anyway) Nothing fancy about it, held an edge and was not too difficult to resharpen. Found a large model on at the BX for 29 bucks and snapped it up.

Odds are nobody really cared much for it and that is why they dropped it. It probably didn't have the tactical look and therefore it didn't sell.

It does seem like they are dropping alot of knives that one would think were good sellers, tastes change I guess. Just my .02 worth

I currently own an old M16 spearpoint serrated that is my EDC, I also have a new M16 spearpoint serrated with the flipper and an M16 EDC spearpoint with the flipper, and all are great knives. I've only had the old one for about two years now, but it works great, and I bought it used, no idea how old it is! The other two I've just bought. I really like the design, and the feel of the knives. While others might say I need to clean my nose saying this, I think you did a great job designing these. As for the original intent of the thread, CRKT is doing what any intelligent company would, watching their bottom line. That's just capitalism, and I for one am happy that we have that type of economy! :p

QS,

Well, although AUS-4 has 3x the carbon as 420J2, AUS-6 (equivalent to 440A) has 4-5x.

420J2 is used in liners and WALL HANGERS. Even the crappiest UC or off-brand knife that doesn't use Paki Pot-Steel uses 440A.

I can't believe they are using 420J2 for their BLADES.

This is just too bizarre and disappointing.

That's why I wrote "I'm definitely not happy with CRKT downgrading their steel".
And AUS-4 is still better than 420J2.

Yup don't think I will be recomending Crkt for a while. And when did they use ats34 on their knives? which models?

They made the Apache model in at least two sizes back in mid-to-late 90's. I recall they made one or two other models in that steel also.

Apache I was made in ATS34 in full size (4"), Apache II size (around 3") and Apache III (2-3/8"), all bead blasted, with some special edition black blades at the end of the run. Nice knives, good steel, but lacking in finger grooves and LAWKS. Still have and enjoy my Apache I PE. I'd send a pix if I could figure out how to get a JPG onto the forum format.

Personally, I like CRKT knives. I have two great ones - M16 and the KFF. No problems at all.

Definitely value for money.

Not only Apache was made of ATS34 but also Seahawk and S-2 at begining. All these models in catalog 2000.

I just bought an CRKT Wasp. Its a good knife, but the grip edges are sharp(not smooth). Blade uses AUS 118.
BTW, what can anyone tell me of AUS 118?

I'm glad I saw this, I almost bought a Side Hawg Knife in 420J2 for a skinner but Alaska Carcajou Hunter is in Aus6m

i just emailed crkt in regards to all the websites touting the crawford kasper folder as having aus6 and they did confirm it is made out of 420j2. they did not reply as to why they switched or to why they are using such a cheap steel on what i think is a relatively good handle. I told them i wasn't real happy about being misled and she said read the catalog.........p
