New CTS-XHP 3.5" Flipper In the House

Hmm, so your blade never actually rusted itself before you applied the lube? Also, is there some sort of technique for flipping? I saw one YouTube video of one guy flipping it out with no wrist motion like it was an assisted opener, but the blade just sort of flops out a third of the way and stays there no matter how fast I try to do it.

Yeah we've discussed that video and it's amazing isn't it? I think it's a pre-generation 3 XM if memory serves me right?? Don't recall but usually you need IKBS - roller thrust bearing system to get that knid of action.

Rick or Rob chimed in and said that Rick doesn't make his knives to be "flippers" but hard use knives with more than one way to deploy them. I've had 2 XM-18's and an XM-24 and none of them would do more than what you describe.

The guy either has his pivot backed out really loose or got some sort of miracle version. I don't mind, mine are very fast. I don't even use much wrist if any, I roll my hand slightly when using the flipper and it snaps right open.

About rust; just heated my blade and pivot really hot for the 12th time over 3 days and not a speck of lube remained to wipe away. It's finished. Polished the blade with a soft cotton cloth and it's cooling down right now.

Tomorrow I test the water spots to see what the Militec-1 did. I expect that it'll be fine and no rust (I hope :D) I'll post some pics.

And BTW, the XM-24 had CTS-XHP as the new one and never got a speck of rust on it. I didn't even lube it either, just the XM-18's of my son's and mine - rust free so far.

I have ZERO problem flipping any of my XM-18's. All the blades are perfectly centered and they fire like rockets! I don't even use lube and just keep them clean.

Also, Rick definitely makes his knives to be flippers....

You guys are funny. :D You DONT need IKBS to get a hard flipper action on the XM-18/XM-24. The pivot does NOT need to be over lubed. The pivot does NOT need to be loose or backed out and there is NO MIRACLE version that flips harder than others. lol. The same pivot is used in all of Ricks 18's and 24's. No matter if its a custom or a production. There absolutely IS a technique for getting your flipper to REALLY flip open. There is no TRICK. ;) You won't figure it out right out of the box. It will take a little practice. I made a quick video to show you how these knifes can flip with ZERO wrist action. No editing and no miracles I assure you. O and my pivots are tight. lol.

You'll notice when I'm flipping the knife I press down on the tip of my index finger and roll back on my first knuckle. That gives you a little more pop when you flip your knife. There really isn't anymore to it. Practice practice practice.

Watch it in HD. :D

The first knife was a gen 3 3 inch. The rest are gen 3 3.5 inchers except for the last which was a gen 2 3.5 inch.

iPhone 4 video!

Exactly!

I hope this stops the misinformation going on in this thread.

Hey Noctis, Feel free to PM me if you didn't understand my explanation of how to get a good flipping action on your knife. I'd be happy to explain it a little more. Really its just like anything else. You just need some good ole fashion practice.

Heck I can do that too - rough on the finger tips. I'd much rather roll my wrist with a Hinderer. That's not what I call a flipper though how about this? Now that's a flipper!

How's it rough on the finger tips???? Lol.

How's that not called a flipper?? Lol

What's the point of posting an RJ Martin Q-36 with thrust bearings in the Rick Hinderer forum??

The point of my posting the video was to show that you don't need anything you mentioned to properly flip one of these knives. Loose pivot, miracle blade, ikbs, thrust bearings. Lol. All you need is a finger. :D

Like you said "Practice practice practice" - it's a pain in the fingertip after awhile. :(

Just an expression like "that's not a knife - here's a knife".....Croc Dundee :D

Too show you that you do need IKBS / thrust bearings to get a "hard" flipper, effortlessly that is.

You guys are funny. You DONT need IKBS to get a hard flipper action on the XM-18/XM-24.

Yeah you do need IKBS / thrust bearings to get a "hard" flipper, or what I call a hard flipper. I can and do really crack mine open with a flick of the wrist for an assist now and then. From a standstill to how hard it opens in your video, is about my best effort too. A hard flip? No argument here. :)

Point taken, you can do that and I can do that, the only difference is that I have some oil on my pivot. My pivot is set by Rick. That video has come up in conversation before on 2 forums.

It's just kidding Rick. That's the fastest XM-18 anybody's ever seen or it wouldn't keep coming up. I called it a "magic knife" or maybe he had his pivot loosened up. Just speculation, nothing more. I'm more than happy with my XM-18 and my method of opening it.

Good video for newbies to flipping btw. It took me awhile to figure out what you demonstrated. Nice job!

Once you know how to flip the XM it flips VERY effortlessly. I'm not gonna get into a debate over it. Which seems to be the norm here. It's a flipper and it flips. Period. We're not discussing RJ's or Burchtrees that use assisted methods of flipping. You don't need IKBS or thrust bearings to get this knife to flip open "hard". Stop trying to make these people believe that you do. I demonstrated this with 6 different knives in a video. What more you need? Lol. I'm not special. Anyone can flip the XM like I did I'm my video. It's not hard at all!

I understand your comments were speculation but your passing bad info. You're comparing 2 totally different knives. That's my whole point.

Ladies and gents. You do NOT need IKBS, thrust bearings, lots of lube or backed out/loose pivots to get the XM18/XM24 flipper to flip hard. It just takes a little practice.

We're thinking to much into this. Flip your knife how ever you need to and use it. Lol.

One last video.

1:00 on the first video and I got it. I've been spoiled silly by assisted openers from Kershaw and got used to simply pushing the blade open with a finger curl, completely ignoring the jimped portion of the flipper. This explains a lot given that I seriously doubt my knife could get any smoother.

Unfortunately I won't have any opportunity to practice until I get my knife back from Rick, at which point I will slap a nice orange G10 scale on it and flip it for hours:thumbup:...or at least I'll try to:p.

Glad you got it brotha!! I'm sure you'll get it bad pretty quick!

I like Chris Reeve's Florinated grease and use it on every knife I own...nothing comes close to it's quality, smoothness and long lasting goodness.

I've never tried it. I should pick some up and give it a try.

Okay flipper stuff over - (I defer to the experts) and on to my water repellent test of a CTS-XHP XM-18 blade treated with Militec-1. I use it and love it but recommend that you do whatever you choose to do with yours. :)

Treated blade both sides and pivot - this is a "bone dry" coating and not oily whatsoever:

Water (municipal) applied to treated blade:

4.5 hours drying time - you can see the dryed spots but no rust:

Blade wiped down with cotton T-shirt:

Good to go guys! I feel ready to to cut something up! :D

Any video of a XM-24 flipped with no wrist action?

Don't have an XM24 here with me today but trust me. It flips open twice as hard as the XM18 due to the extra weight and length of the blade.

cziv - Does the militec make the blade look any glossier? Can you touch the blade and tell there is something on it?

Interesting to see water bead up on a blade with that type of finish. I wonder if it would also be resistant to fingerprints(not in a rust related way, but more to do with the oily mess that sticks on until you wash it).

Also I take it you won't be using your treated XM-18 to cut any fruit anytime soon?

Kinda curious to find out whether Tuf Glide or Militec-1 "sticks" on longer.

Oh, and check out what I got in the mail:

I can feel this Christmas is going to be a good one:thumbup:. Obviously I'll be broke for the next month or two, but I won't be left wanting for presents(from myself, to myself).
