New custom knife came bent to the right?

Hello guys,

I was hoping I could get some insight from some of you here regarding a new knife I had received.
It's a fixed blade about 8" overall and a 4" blade.
After opening it I looked it over and when I held it up eye level and looked down the spine from the butt end to tip I noticed that the top half (handles to tip) was slightly cocked/bent to the right.
I would say 1-2mm. Nothing major but noticeable nonetheless.
Is this a big cause for concern? I had sent an email to the maker but have yet to hear back?
If its fairly common with custom knives I guess I can live with it but if it means that it wasn't properly hear treated in one way or another I may have to send it back.

Thanks for any help.

It is very common for blades to warp during heat treat but any good maker should fix a noticeable warp before sending it out.

I would think he will contact you and make it right. I don't think most makers would want one of their knives out of their shop like that. Doesn't seem like it would help their rep. It probably just slipped by him somehow.

Thanks for replying Guys
I also noticed that the scale on the left (near the tip) isn't flush with blade about 1/2" down. So it def. is off and my eyes aren't deceiving me.
Lets hope I get a reply soon.

EDIT: I would post up pics but I do not have a photbucket account. If anyone wants to see/help I can email them pics to put up.

To me it would depend on whether or not this was a $100 field grade user or a more elaborate $300+ piece.

Sometimes even relatively expensive pieces will have flaws. For example, here is a relatively spendy solid gold dagger made by one of the greatest makers to ever live, and there appears to be a fairly large air bubble trapped in the clear handle up against the gold, you can see it in the center picture. http://media.vorotila.net/items/3/1/9/t1@319ee067-185e-474e-9f3a-e8f1a11a9786.jpg

All things that are made by hand have flaws, it's a matter of degrees and expectations.

Makes sense. I'm not looking for perfection, just concerned if this is something that would weaken the blade more than it would if it was not bent? I just want it to perform to its full potential.

Go ahead and send me an e-mail with the pics. I will put them up.

Just click on my name and then on send e-mail.

Well, before you post pictures of a knifemakers work I would let him have a chance to make it right.
As said, most knives have flaws. Newer makers, or even less talented makers sometimes(should?) price their work accordingly.

Email sent to thegeek574. No makers mark shown. Just spine angle pic.

I had emailed the maker yesterday and have yet to hear back. I'll wait another day before I email again.
Thanks guys.

Thanks again for taking the time to put the pics up!

You can see on top of the left scale there's a gap where it's not butting up to the blade because the blade is off to the right.

When I tried stropping the blade I could really tell it was bent to the side. I would imagine while using it for other chores I would feel it as well. As I mentioned above, I can live with it not being perfect but I'm not sure if I could keep it when I can feel that it is bent when using it.

^ i second that. i would just contact him and im sure they will correct his. i have a few sub 200$ non production field knives and aside from a machining mark or slight uneven grind i have never seen this :/

Well now I don't feel so bad for nit picking! Lol

I hope he will take care of this. I had sent him a totally cool email about it, so I hope this doesn't turn into a crap Sunday.

I am not an expert but it almost looks like less of a bend than possibly a grind that is not centred. Seems like maybe the bevel drifted beeper or farther over on one side than the other. I have seen it one a couple of my own first knives. The gap in the scale, when viewed from that angle almost looks like it has a busted shoulder, like the tang is a hair thinner there than it is farther back
