New Design- What Do You Think?

I like it a lot. That finish would save me a good deal of 0000 steel wool and Flitz polish, while still looking great.

Nicely executed, as always.

Sucks! Send it to me and I'll recycle it for ya.;)

If you don't mind me asking, what was your process on the finish?

Well, after the heat treat, I didn't grind off the scale like I normally do. I just scrubbed it a little with fine sand paper and steel wool. Then I sprayed it with Clorox bleach cleaner to add a little pitting but I didn't leave it that long. Then after that I put a coat of cold blue. Finally, I rubbed with steel wool and WD40. That's it.

I think some people prefer the rough finish so I'll be doing this more often.

Thanks again guys for the kind words.

I like the big beefy handle, looks like it would be lively in the hand.
Don't change a thing on that baby.

Man. I'm loving it Ray. Is that blade tumbled? Just heard about tumbled finish blades, and I was real impressed when I saw it in person.

I think you have a winner there, Ray. Out of curiosity, how much will that beast go for when you start selling them?

Great knife! As has been said, looks like a Kep-muk, or a Ness-hart. Whichever you like best. I like the micarta handles!

I think we should have a poll which it is. I vote for Ness-Hart.

It looks nice, Ray, like it has been loved for years. Nice blade design.

Andy, it's not tumbled. It's as quenched then bleach, then cold blue, then steel wool..

Dawsonbob, as with every knife I make I will eventually sell it but I don't think I should be talking business in this forum...

Don, Kep-Muk is easier for me to say but I will try to make a better design blending the Kephart and Nessmuk knife. I like the idea.

Ray, I like that one a lot. It is quite different from what I am used to seeing come from you. Typically, I can recognize a Laconico from across the room but this one is different.

It kind of has a stretched out Nessmuk look to it. It looks like it would actually be a great blade for butchering deer.

I really like that finish too. I would like to see the finish on some of your more recognizable designs.

When I started making knives, everything was hand rubbed. It's the easiest way for me to finish a knife but it's way more work and very time consuming. Earlier this year, I learned how to do a Scotchbrite finish which saves time. It was a little hard for me at first to be happy with the finish but I've gotten better at it. The rustic finish seems to be the easiest. This one took a little more time because I'm experimenting with the process but when I get it down right, it should be easier and quicker. I also like it because you don't really have to worry about getting scratches, pitting and staining on your blade when you have a rough finish.

Thanks again to everyone for all the kind words. I wasn't really expecting such a response.:)
Sweet! The shape of the blade and the red Micarta go well with the look.
So do you think the next Frankenstein project comes with combining both finishes?...

Now Ray, I'm gonna just be honest with you about her....
Actually, I have always been partial to ones who looked that good, nice and curvey BUT were really functional and useful good workers - (and like you said - were a little dirty?) Know wutta mean?

That is one kickin' camp knife. As a historical aficionado I have always loved that kind-o finish - rough and tumble. Send it to me now and I will always be your friend, Ray...

I got to handle this tonight, and this design is a real winner. Perhaps this is the design that will be my next one from Ray. I have some nice bloodwood that would go really well on it. I'm not a big fan of the rustic finish, but the design is something that I really like.

That's real nice:thumbup:
Love the blade shape and finish. Ever since I got my Recurve with Butterscotch scales I've been scheming to bring it to a rendezvous. But man-o-man, this rustic finish one, with wood scales, copper pins and wham, I'll be carrying a Laconico in each of the eras I live within:D

Great knife you made. Really nice aesthetics; the curves look perfect to me for a bushcrafter , and I love micarta. Excellent Job!

The blade shape was what really caught my eye. Great combination of two classic styles into one. The finish is a plus also to me as i like a worn look. Less to maintain.
I also am a stickler for the belly of handles and the area around the pinky finger. I like a noticeable belly and I like the handle to fall away at the rear, top and bottom (pinky finger area) just as this does. Makes for a very secure grip without feeling cramped. The blade being so close to the index finger is a big plus for me! If I never saw another choil again, i'd be a happy camper.
I think Ray hit a home run with this one! Anxious to handle it :D

Ray, I don't think it could have been more highly approved than it has been. I somehow think you have a real winner in the KepMuk. You've made some really nice knives in the past, but this is the one that I like best out of all that I've seen.
