The Discovery Channel is beginning to launch a new "survival", "bug out", "bug in" tv show called "The Colony". The show is slated to start on Thursday, July 27th at 10PM E/P. The premise for the show is 7 people from all walks of life are to be dropped into an abandoned town, no running water and no electricity. They need to band together to use what's available throughout the town to survive, on top of beating off "hostile" bands of people who are trying to take and use their materials, food, and water. After reading about and seeing some previews I think this show really has some decent potential, but only time will tell. It seems like a small experiment to see what would happen should the US get hit by a terrorist attack on a biological level. Just thought I'd let all my fellow RAT Packers in on the information.

This is Season 2. Season 1 sucked. It was kind of neat watching them rig water supplies (including solar heated water) and the like, but they also spent a lot of time making flamethrowers and a bunch of crap that was pretty impractical IMO. Probably a bunch of clips on youtube and hulu to see what they did last season.

My bad Adam, they keep announcing it like it's starting for the first time. Thanks bro for correcting me on that! :)

yes this is season 2......
season 1 was ok...
Season 2 maybe better but again it is a controlled envoriment & gets boring

No bad at all. I had almost forgotten about season 1. I agree with Tony the controlled "oh look I found 40 car batteries" and "oh look, we happen to have a scientist who specializes in electronics here. Let's hook up our TVs and coffee grinders.":D

I used to live real close to where they filmed it in Chalmette LA.

I watched Season 1 and could not wrap my head around it. It was entertaining but I could not figure out how anyone could act like they thought the world actually ended in this scenario. It amazed me that they didn't have anyone else near there on the LA river even though it was a controlled environment for the show. I think it was another show that suffered from editing. I am still going to watch season 2.

Season 1 also just happened to have people that were experts in conveniently necessary fields for the show. They all seemed to have some kind of background in "green" engineering and sustainable energy.

Agreed. I'll probably DVR season 2 and watch it all in one whack some night that I have free.

They need to "seed" the cast with someone like Gary Bussey to make it realistic, not "green scientists."

That said, my DVR is set to "series record" - we'll see how it goes.

:D
Maybe Flavor Flav. He seems to make for an interesting reality star.

Lol. Thanks for the reminder 333, I had cleared all my DVR timers and would have missed it. :D

The first season was easily forgettable. it was more of a what neat stuff can we build out of the junk the discovery channel left us rather than a survival show and that i kind of liked. However when they introduced the characters to create tension i really expected someone to get stabbed and it never happened.

Season 1 was so awful. I watched like three or four episodes and was just bored out of my mind.

They spent more time crying about "leaving a man behind" on one of their "scavenging missions" than they did actually putting anything together worthwhile.

i missed season one but have pre-set the dvr so i dont miss this one.
seems like discovery is getting on the survival boat. good to see some info and entertainment that isnt a dumb as most of the shows on.

i pretty much watch history, tlc & discovery. not much else worth watching except some movies that come on

I agree for sure that if Discovery would let more things go and not be so edit happy they'd end up with a much more realistic show. That was one thing I picked on right away was how everyone was a specific specialist in just what the group would of needed. Not having seen season 1 I really can't comment, but let's hope season 2 is as realistic as they are able to produce.

I tried (hard) to like season one but I could not get into!!!!
Season two on the other hand looks a little more interesting!! We'll see how it goes.

Yeah I also tried to get into season 1 but it was hard. I've been pretty happy with Dual Survivor and the Man & Woman series so far. I'm not holding much hope for the Colony. We'll see I guess. Anyone been watching Top Shot ? Haven't seen it mentioned here.

Dual Survival and Man Woman Wild are 2 of my favorite shows for the summer. Top Shot is a great show too... think Survivor with guns.

I would love to be on this show I would be the guy hiding in the vents & stealing gear from the others just to show how crazy some people will get. I could see me all hunkered down in a ditch covered in rat skins eating pork & beans
