It is the big rod from ferrocerium.com in an end cut of antler, drilled for lanyard, polished from 320 to 2000 and wearing 3 good coats of Birchwood Casey Tru-Oil, basically linseed oil plus a few other goodies I think. I parked it in devcon 2 ton, and here it is. And yes, it throws a mean shower of sparks.

The wooden block in a few of the shots is the walnut for my upcoming bushcraft blade project. A woodworker by the name of L. Lagasse got a much larger chunk from his father in the 70's and this block and a few others are whats left.

That's a beauty!!!
It just needs a nice natural handled scandi to go with it. All that plastic is mucking up the photos :D

very well done! you planning to make more? I would'nt mind a large 6" x 3/8" ferro rod with a plain wood handle!

Great work, for some reason I see that paired with a Gossman PSKsr in stag.

Nice job!

BTW Tru-Oil is fantastic stuff. It's been used on countless gunstocks that are subjected to rain, snow and everything mother nature can throw at it. Easy to use and it looks great on wood, and now antler.

Very nicely done, and thanks for the finishing directions. I've got some shed material that I've been wanting to work with.

Jeff

That matches your skinner beautifully.

Oh yeah, I forgot you were the one that made that beauty of a knife. You don't need a Helle, you're already set just make yourself a couple more of those!!!

Wait, I got an idea, you make me one of those, and I'll send you a Helle or brusletto.:p

Very nice!! I was thinking of something like this myself but I'm not sure I can get a decent piece of antler off the set I have.

Nice stuff....Just so you know I've had luck taking firesteel and a basic striker (not a knife but the LMF striker) on my carry-on bag through airport security all over the place during this year (Atlanta, Miami, Memphis, Detroit, Newark, Mexico City, Merida, Guatemala City, Honduras, Dubai, Frankfurt Germany). Matched with cotton balls in the PSK and a little tube of vasoline, I have a complete air-friendly fire kit and not once a hassel running my bag through the scanners...

The bastids did remove my jeweler tweezers though the first time through!

I would make two 3" rods out of a 3/8 X 6" rod. An inch in the handle is plenty, and the bottom 2" is about what I use when striking anyway. A full 6" rod on a handle would be a bit clunky IMHO. If I whip out a couple more I'll let you know. I can use pecan, hickory, or bois d'arc (aka, osage orange), with my preference being bois d'arc.

I've just finnished a pair of those. One is deer antler and the other's moose.I'll try to get some pics of them up asap.
