so i ended up getting a custom fixed blade (first one) and im satisfied with it but i feel like the profiling may be off, i know for sure that its not sharp. i have no experience with profiling so im not sure.
heres some pictures of it, right now my problems with it are the leather sheath seems to be pretty dry, i believe the profiling is off, and its not sharp at all really. (the profiling im not sure of as i dont know much about that part)

If it's not sharp enough, Maybe you could send it back to the maker to sharpen it up better. Does look like the angle could be off a bit.

just picked it up in person from the maker whos about 2 hours away unfortunately. i planned on trying to fix it myself once i get good enough at sharpening. just wasnt sure if it was off or not. the edge is polished, just not sharp

Send it to him, and ask him to cover all the shipping expenses. A knife, especially from a custom maker, should come sharp.
i hate being nice because i feel bad doing that. i might just bite the bullet and email him. should i mention the grind too or no? he told me it was razor sharp and i didnt get to fully test it aside from the thumbnail test so i just took his word for it. but i got a better look at it and its a no go

Well, if he said, it's razor sharp, then it should be. And since sharpening a knife is an easy and fundamental thing to do for a knife maker, I would be embarrassed, if a customer got a knife from me, that's not at least shaving sharp.

Yes, the edge bevels are uneven, atleast at the tip. You can tell him that, of course, if it's something that bothers you. It's not a huge deal in my opinion though.

this was his response after i asked him: “That is just the first sharpening. As it is used and hand sharpened it will even out. I have never had any complaints on the way one of my knives cuts If you are not happy. Bring it back and I will refund your purchase price”

But no offer to redo the edge, even with a fee? Hmmm. I like the first sentence, but the rest of the message sounds a little rude. Imo.

i agree, hes an old timer though, 80 years old, probably has a lot of pride, which is understandable. i think his main specialty is folders anyways

Eh its just my opinion. You might offer to spend a little toward his repair, and he may take the high road and do it free.

honestly its too much of a hassle for what it is in my opinion. spending $10 to ship it each way and then potentially another $10+ for him to fix it. id rather spend that money on my first stone so ill be able to sharpen all my knives which i wanted to start doing anyways

Then why the brouhaha? Perhaps you just wanted to know if it was "off"? o_O What about the sheath? ? ?

no brouhaha was intended, shouldve made it clearer that i wanted more info on if i was just uneducated or not when it came to edge geometry. it was something ive never seen before.

the sheath i dont even know how to explain really, dont know if it could benefit from being oiled or using something like sno-seal on it? i dont have much experience with heavy leather really outside of boots, even that generally isnt heavy leather so i dont know

I suggest you talk to him in the manner of yours posts (not accusatory just inquisitive and a little concerned) and ask his opinion, NOT just that he'll give you your money back but help educate you about the knife he made for you. He SHOULD be happy to do that IMO.

thats what i did! this is what i said: “hey man, got home and got a better look, the blade geometry seems to be a bit off (pictured below) im not sure if it was intentional or not, if so whats the purpose behind it?” and then “also unfortunately the part that’s highlighted red is the sharp part and unfortunately its not razor sharp like i had initially thought” (same pictures i postwd here were what i sent him) and the response i posted here was the response he gave to that.

Well, it's up to you of course but, personally, I would take him up on the refund, even if I didn't feel the need, just because of his attitude. I'm an old fart myself but that doesn't give me/us the right to be dismissive/attitudinal of those who spend their hard earned money with us. Just my .02.

Hard to tell by pictures alone ... but it does appears to have uneven bevels and maybe even a slightly off center apex ... but again hard to say for sure through just those pictures ...

if you are not happy with it ... be polite contact the maker and explain your issues and ask if he is willing to give it a look and teprofile and sharp the knife ...

if he refuses or if he gets upset ... then you have a choice to make

1. either take him up on returning it
for a refund

2. keep it and either sharpen it
yourself to your liking

3. keep it and send it off to one of the skilled sharpeners on the forum
such as Josh@REK Sharpening ...
or Jason B. ... or one of the others
listed as paying members with "services offered"

generally i agree, if he had offered to cover shipping for the refund i wouldve done it, but to return it id have to have my dad drive me an hour and a half out there again when it was already a hassle to do it today to pick it up. overall i love the design and look, just wasn’t finished properly unfortunately but that’s something i believe i can send out to get fixed by someone on here or fix it myself!

it 100% has an off center apex, with the bevels one starts higher than the other and one is deeper than the other.
