New For 2017: Cold Steel Frenzy (XL) Folder.

The Frenzy has a little curve in the edge. I would like it more if the edge was straight. I am still interested, though.

That does eliminate one of the main attractions of the wharncliffe for many people, easy sharpening. You can't just lay this one flat on a stone and go to town like a true straight edge. I do the lion's share of my sharpening these days on my WSKO with blade grinding attachment, so it's no big deal, but for those who prefer to hand sharpen it does present a bit of a challenge. You're basically sharpening a very subtle hawkbill, which requires the edge of a stone or a round object with abrasive (sandpaper over dowel for example). I too would have preferred a true wharncliffe, but it's not a deal breaker by any means.

So I got my Frenzy I in last week.
And I have to say there is nothing like this on the Market. Its Thin, the Thinnest 5.5" that I've used, but whats really took me with interest was the overall build. Its much more subtle in build quality than previous Cold Steels. The G10 is smooth yet it has a Tactile feel. Way nicer for everyday carry compared with the G10 on a Recon or a Voyager.

Also its Loooong, but it actually carries well in IWB. Its super thing, and not wide at all, which lends it to having a Small carry feel. Considering its a beast in length. When opened, It doesnt feel like it can chop down trees, it feels more like a wand. Which Kinda like, its very easy to Maneuver because its not Blocky or wide. Super impressive is the amount of length you get on this knife.

The Blade is actually thicker than I thought by looking at the pictures and the tip is much more fortified than any Wharncliffe type blade that Ive seen.

Im putting this knife up against the Cold Steel Black Talon II, which is by far the thinnest 4 inch Knife I've ever seen with Cold Steel. Now it might look Thick compared with the BT II, its actually very thin because the Black Talon II is SUPER THIN. The New clip of the frenzy was well thought out and is firm but not loose. I'd say its nearly perfect...but not Perfect. The Handle was designed very well. There are TONS of different ways to hold this thing due to the great handle.

This thing weighs nothing. I mean Nothing. when its on you...you don't feel it. Which is kind of scary considering how damn long it is. Its as if they tried everything they could to reduce the weight on it...

Overall, great job on designing this one CS. The blade was very thought out as well as the handle. Prob my top 2 cold steels at the moment. If it weren't for Cold Steels horrible Customer Service in my experience, I'd give them higher marks. But With this Frenzy, I'll give them the highest marks that I can.

Good Job CS.

the font on that knife just ruins it for me. so 80's styled and cheesy. man o man come on cold steel knock off the silly fonts.

other than that it looks like a winner, not really my thing but i like big bladed folders and it appears to be well designed and made.

Thanks for updating with pics and thoughts. I just have a question for you, are the thumbstuds removable? In am easy way, I mean, unscrewing them?

Thank you!

You are 100% right sir. Its Super Mall Ninja. The Knife already looks crazy...why ruin it with that Font.

I'll have to tell you when I get home. I'm out of town at the moment, so I'll try to get them off when I get home. I'm sure they are because it wouldn't make sense for CS to make them a Part of the blade. Every Cold Steel I've had they are detachable.

I'm also going to give it a Shot to Dye them in the next week or so. I'm going to try the RIT Dye method, with the 4 cups of Hot water and 1 Cup of Vinegar. I saw all three colors in person and the Dark Green was the Darkest By far, and it was also the most "Understated". Im assuming it will Dye well.....

These pictures aren't helping my resolve to wait for a sale on the Frenzy. Does anyone have a picture with the Hold Out I and II?

Interesting design. I wish it were a true wharncliffe and not a wharncliffe/hawkbill.
Is it flat or hollow ground?

So After Carrying Mine for almost 3 weeks, I have to say this thing is pretty amazing.
It has VERY LITTLE space in carry. its not only the slenderness which makes this easy to carry, but How light it is. Its kind of hard to beat when it comes to the weight. Its almost non existent. The only thing that reminds me that I'm carrying it is the Length. Its long, but Not long like the Rexon XL or the Voyager XL, which is really obtrusive.

Im super impressed with this one guys.

This has pretty much pushed out the Black Talon II, which has a substantially smaller blade it, out of my the lineup.
Considering that the Black Talon has a 4" Blade it weighs 4.9 Ounces's and the Frenzy weights 5.6 Ounces. Which is so close.....Also, the G10 is So much nicer on my pants than the G10 on the Black Talon...and compared to the Recon 1....there is no comparison.

Give this Frenzy a shot. You won't be disappointed. Its substantially different than anything else on the market.

Hey Monkey!

Well. I don't have much experience with the Holdout. I have had all of the Holdout Models, except for the smallest ones, but Never carried it because I couldn't stand the G10. It was like sandpaper and carried like hell for me. So Long term Was a no for me.

The G10 on this is Smooth but tactile in touch. A pleasure to carry. But One thing I do remember is that the Movement on my Holdout's were horrendous, Im sure because I never broke them in, but this one out of box was as smooth as could be for a Cold Steel.

But I can see why the hold out would be a better comparison to the Frenzy. The Holdout is wider than the Frenzy, this isn't a very wide knife, specially for its size. I wish I could be more help man.

If you haven't tried the newer XHP Hold Outs I'd definitely recommend giving the Hold Out II a try if you can find one cheap. The Hold Out I still uses the rough G10 but the thinner, smoother G10 on the Hold Out II makes it carry great. It's still a fairly rough action though. Not sure why, but I have two Hold Out II's and they're both rougher than my Hold Out I and Hold Out III.

I just came in from a dogwalk carrying my XL Hold-out in my front pant pocket. I'm flabbergasted at your complaint about the G-10 being like sandpaper...oh wait... do you carry your Hold-out clipped inside your underwear?

Yes sir. I carry IWB. Well on the inside of my jeans...but yea. I guess it does rub up on my Knickers. lol.
It does feel like sandpaper on the underwear. Can stand it.

Ok, in the past I've kept my opinion to myself, but please don't desecrate this knife with a rusty, zip-tied nut. It would look especially bad on a narrow blade like this.
