1084, double edge forged in diamond cross section. Started with 1/4 thick 1 1/2 inch wide 1084 from Mace and Aldo at Ashokan. Cleaned a bit of the scale off with an angle grinder and 120 grit, then cleaned that up with my big stone wheel(350 grit). still some scale to take off though. Cleaned up the profile a bit too.

Blank shape rough forged and cutt off of parent bar, no bandsaw for profiling i like to get as much use out of a section of this godly material as possible.

Sam, that looks great !! What type of sword are you modeling this one after ?

I'm in the process of making a Centurions set of Arms, a Gladius, a Pugio and a Spear :D

O B S E S S E D ! ! ! ! ! ;)

Thanks guys! Luke, I sure will. David NICE SET! That will be a cool thing when all done, you gotta get into bronze work to tun out some matching armor too:). I modeled it after no particular sword, one that tapers in width from the base, nice wide blade for good cutting yet also a serviceable tip, I just wanted a generic cut and thrust double edge sword, hand and a half length handle. Page, I am not sure yet, I am going to trace out the tang and lower area of the blade out on a sheet of paper, then copy it a bunch of times with the copy machine then draw out guards and pommels and handles until i find one I like. I'll either way go with some nice burls, I have to talk to my buddy Kurt to see if he has any right sized hunks of something outstanding(maybe oosic;)). I am a massive fan of amboyna so I will ask about that first. Mild steel for the parts, or maybe wrought iron not sure yet.

Terrific looking sword so far. My hat is off. Please show some progress shots. Cant wait to see it done.

if you decide to go with casting some bronze furniture get in touch, I have been doing a fair amount of bronze sandcasting lately
Maybe some weekend you could come up to Ithaca and melt some metal

Thanks Ray! This one took about 5 hours from when i picked up the bark stock to when I left the shop. Hmmmm, Page I might take you up on that one bronze would look sweet! Let me draw out some guard and pommel designs and i'll let you know.

Stats are 38 13/16ths overall length, 29 1/2 inch blade, 1 5/8ths wide at the bas tapering to 1 inch 2 inches from the tip, 8 inch tang that i left alot of meat one to draw longer if need be. A couple better overall shape shots.

Nice forging on that one Sam. I'm looking forward to seeing the total package. Ya gotta love that 1084. :D

I have some of the 5160. You're giving me the itch to try a sword! Nice work on that. I can't wait to see it finished.

Thanks guys, I am going to work on this one and not start any more until it is done.

Larry it is GREAT stuff I sure wish I could get more, alas funds are a bit low now, though i will be getting my load of the 5160 from Burton soon so i'll have more steel than I know what to do with.

Dan, thanks! The pictures make it look a bit better than it is, needs alot of work still. This is the first sword i have done in the 3 months i was out of the shop during the move.

Scott GO FOR IT, it is a load of work but fun the whole time, i like knives but swords are completely different, i get a more romantic swashbuckling feeling from swords:).

Swashbuckling ? This summer when I hear of river pirates I'll know exactly who it is !!

Robert, there is sometimes nothing better I would like then to ply the waves looting rafters/canoers(at swordpoint of course) and causing general mayhem by day, then womanising and carousing by night(Cedar Rapids;)). (JOKE)

Thank you Will, i will definately post pictures when it is done.
