New found respect - Cold Steel

Word up on that.
Nothing wrong with Cold Steel. Their Voyagers and Recons are worth every penny and more. They have one of the strongest locks available. They are great edc's for hard use environments!

I am the proud owner of a rajah II and i have to say after 2 years the only complaint i have was the handle material. the grivory handle was a little uncomfortable and i had to sand down the edges a little bit to make it a nice grip but other then that it has been the best folder i have ever owned. I would buy another in heart beat and for you guys who prefer folders over fixed i think you should check it out you may like it.

To the Op, with all do respect you even admit you never had considered them so I am assuming you have never used one either.Maybe in the future you shouldn't just believe what knife snobs with too much money(400$ folders) say about something without experiencing it for yourself.
He said he had been turned off by the cheesy, mall-ninja marketing and aesthetic, not the price point.

Also, you don't need to be a snob or have "too much money" to enjoy high end knives. Many of us enjoy knives at all price points.

If Cold Steel made their earlier Voyager and Nogales Clip-point folders with left-handed pocketclips, I probably never would've had first-hand experience with Kershaws, Spydercos, or Benchmades or knew this place existed. So I would've saved a few grand over the past 10 years, but missed out on a lot of fun. Their 2012 Large Vaquero Voyager is spoiling me quite well.

Between then and now, I found that their steel-lined American Lawman (the older version) had a load-bearing screw as part of the pocket-clip screws. Still haven't figured out ideal spring placement for the lock, but I'm getting very good disassembling/reassembling everything else in it.

Yup, the new Voyagers are real winners. Great design and amazing construction considering the price.

I love their trailmaster & recon scout. The mar tempered recon scout for 99.00 is such a great deal.i cant think of any other knife like it for 99.00 that is as good.

I can't speak to the Voyagers, but I love my American Lawman. The Andrew Demko "Tri-Ad" lock is amazing - especially for a $60 knife. I'm not well-versed in steel, but the "AUS-8A" gets really sharp, though i wish it kept it a little longer. However, it's a $60 knife and not some super-steel (AKA expensive) and i'm pleased with it.

I've never been a Cold Steel "hater" and i sure like my American Lawman. Their Master Hunter is a really nice looking/practical field knife and would be an excellent small blade.

I also have a Trailmaster, but due to a design failure (90 degree grind angle at the blade/tang junction) i'm more concerned about it failing with heavy use than i care to be. For a over-the-counter hard-use field knife, i wish i had bought a Becker BK2 - just wasn't acquainted with 'em at the time.

I have a good number of the 'old' Voyagers and just picked up a new Lg Voyager 4". The Tri-Ad lock and new design of handle are real winners, IMO. Sure, I would rather have a VG-1 blade, but their AUS-8 is perfectly serviceable and easy to sharpen.

I snagged an XL Tanto Voyager at a gunshow for $30 and I'm very happy with it for that price, but I would change two things about it: the texture on the handle (feels like I would have blisters after few minutes) and I would add a thumbplate to the spine.

I don't understand why Cold Steel would make a knife with a 5.5-inch folding blade and choose not to put a thumbplate on it. The Rajah (I have the II, which I think is overall a much better knife than the Voyager) and Espada have it, so why does the Voyager get left out of the fun?

They have to keep some reasons for people to want the more expensive folders. All the best features in $30-50 models would kill that.

I was lucky enough to score a large clip-point voyager here on the forums for $30 recently, & so far, I love it.i I have been edcing it fo the last couple weeks, & its a bit on the big side, but I like bigger blades. I also sanded the handle texturing underneath the clip & added some nice, sharp jimping with my dremmel, & it is now just about perfect! Not into a lot of their designs, personally, but the Voyager is awesome, & there's a few others I would like to check out now (American Lawman, Recon, maybe the AK-47)...

Cold Steel large Voyager Tanto. Years of use and abuse. Heavily sharpened.Broke the original molded pocket clip years ago.Field repaired with a 2 screw clip from another knife, which I really didn't like. Later found an old Spyderco laying around with a broken tip,but a good clip,so it donated the parts. 10 minutes with some sandpaper for the original repair and a small drill has kept this one in business. The Spydie clip is still on it today and going strong.
My other favorite Cold Steel is the SRK. For an all around field knife in this price range,it's hard to beat.

would you guys say that the CS voyager is the best evolution of the Buck folding hunter? say 'yes' and i'll buy one. :D

I have a new Voyager Large Clip. The Triad Lock is *very* strong and definitely makes the voyager series a generational blade, like the Buck. I can't say it replaces it, but it is certainly an evolution of it with stronger lockup and more performance-minded materials (grivory, aluminum liners). Buy with confidence.

The new for 2012 Lone Star and Mackinac hunters are even closer to the 110 than the Voyagers are.

I agree. I haven't held one, so can't comment on the feel, but they look great, especially with the Triad and thumb-stud deployment. It is a nice approach to the classic design.

I own a pretty decent number of different CS items and they've all proven very dependable. You just have to pick and choose through their selection to find the models that represent a solid value.

Nice to hear, my only beef is that once you go past the 100$ price range, nothing changes, they use the same steels for the most part and their 600$ fixed blades still have kryton handles:barf:
i love the AK-47, Recon 1, and american lawman folders though

Yeah their more expensive offerings tend not to represent the same value as their lesser-priced models.
