New found respect - Cold Steel

I have a Recon 1, American Lawman, and all three sizes of the Voyagers. They are all super tough dependable knives. Edge holding is great also. The Tri-Ad lock is by far the strongest lock on a folding knife to date in my opinion. And I'm not just guessing, I've tested these locks to the extreme. You really do get your money's worth with these knives.

Welcome to the real world, Coop1957! I've used CS for years and their heat treat is great. You probably won't believe it, but I'm sitting here with one of their old Recon 1 knives. Not the ones with the AUS8 blades, but the earlier one...with the 440A steel. Now the mall ninja specials almost always use 420 or 440A blade steels. You sharpen the latter and...nothing. The Böker Magnums also use junk 440A (I have one I've tried to sharpen now for two years and it's just as dull as the day I bought it).

The amazing thing is, I can't tell the difference between the CS 440A and their AUS8, and I have the Recon 1, Night Force and Pro-Lite, and the 440A in each of those knives will cut you like a razor if you're not careful. Unlike the mall ninja knives, the CS 440A sharpens to a blistering sharp edge and keeps it for a long time. I have a Lansky ceramic V-shaped sharpener and all my Cold Steel blades sharpen with just a few swipes. I was very happy with the company's VG-1 stainless and disappointed that the Voyagers went back to AUS8 after they upgraded the steel. Fortunately I bought several of them before they discontinued them.

The Tri-Ad locks are the strongest in the business and I just got their XL Voyager Vaquero (plain edge). The blade is incredibly sharp. Some of the Benchmades I bought in the past were incredibly good knives with very good steel and light weight. After using them and the earlier Voyagers, I came to really value large, sharp knives that weigh almost nothing. I'm going to miss that with the Voyager line of knives, but like I said, I stocked up.

Cold Steel made a name for itself by providing knives with large blades that were easy to carry. What other company made 5- and 6-inch knives that fit in one's back pocket? I started carrying a 6-inch Voyager when I was accosted by two large dogs that had freed themselves from a fenced-in back yard. They came at me from two directions and I could tell they meant business. I was unarmed at the time, but fortunately I could tell which was the dominant dog. I used a backpack to keep that dog at bay and was eventually able to chase them off. Having been bit before by a Doberman, I didn't want to get caught in that situation again. So now I carry large knives wherever I go. Again, thanks to CS, I have that option.

The CS Pro-Lite used 440A stainless, but the plain edge version stayed viciously sharp!

CS made very sharp, large knives that were easy to carry.

I have an old Pro-Lite also, but the tanto shape to it is gone thanks to an overzealous friend's sharpening attempt. I still carry it to this day and it had never let me down and I've used the shit out of it, and all over too! I have a Voyager and Recon-1 as well as the old style AK-47. All are great, sharp, hard use knives. They are right in my comfort zone price-wise also. Just my 2 cents.
Would love to get another Pro-lite if I could find one.

I had an original CS Voyager Large Clip Point when they first came out and got a free replacement from CS years after I broke the integrally-molded clip.
Recently, I acquired a Large Voyager Tanto Tri-Ad Lock and it is, hands-down, the best value folder I've ever laid hands upon.
Hell, I'd be willing to pay more if CS would make them in the US.
Was trying to decide between it and a Delica 4 and the Voyager won.
Funny enough, the salesperson pointed out that the Voyager didn't unlock as smoothly as the Spydie but, clearly, he did not understand the Tri-Ad Lock.
This knife is the cat's ass for affordable folders, IMHO.

Thanks,
Lee

I'm actually putting in an order for my third Voyager tonight, along with a Condor Barong or Kumunga, not sure which yet. I gave a large Voyager Tanto to a bud recently that liked it, so I'll try the large clip this time. I already have the XL clip and it is a bit too much for day to day. Great fun to have though.:D

I like the look of the previous generation 4" Voyager, but I don't care for the overly ergonomic handles of the current ones. The Vaqueros? Quick, pass me a garbage can. :p

I have the regular Bushman and like it a bit. I do wish it had a squared instead of rounded handle. I'll probably pick up a Tanto Lite soon, even though I prefer a non-tanto shape I don't like the bone breaker and shorter handle on the Outdoorsman Lite.

I agree with this. My recon Tanto is on my LBE, ready to go if necessary.

Here's my CS Tanto for the backpack :) Still unused as it rides as a backup j.i.c. blade. My first CS was that hollow handled boar knife to make a spear with and I found it pretty tough - only bent the tip after it went clean through a board and impacted the rock wall behind (dangit).

I still carry my XL clip point Voyager in my sweat coat pocket at home everyday.I've had that knife since 1996.

The Cold Steel Sisu has to be one of my favorite factory knives of all time. Too bad they don't make it anymore. The Caledonian Edge is one slick folder too. Their hawks and machetes are tough to beat for the price.

Great knives overall, and aus8 is good, tough steel!Wish they get back some of older models.....new voyagers are excellent and price is amazing but are just little bulky!

I have a Mini AK-47.
I had to send back my first one, but the second one i got was/is perfect.
Strong, tip is strong, handle is grippy, and the clip is VERY tight. (not really a bad thing)
My only gripe is that it doesnt really stay sharp over some useage.

I have several CS knives, good stuff ( except the old "custom series", didn't impress me ), but their Tri-ad it's awesome. I have 2 Recon, 2 Voyager, American Lawman, Rajah II&III, AK-47 :) If they decide to start a new "custom series" with titanium, G10/ micarta, a better steel and Tri-ad, I am pretty sure that these would be the top of the production knives .
