New Fred Perrin Fixed Blade! WOW !

Wow- I will have to save my $$$ for that Perrin. And I'm another one thats hoping for an outstanding sheath...

What the???

Ok lets re-examine a post from 4 months ago.

"Blame it on the lawyers" seems to be what you took issue. Why that would bother anyone but a lawyer is beyond me, especially when it is said rather in jest.

Trademarks have everything to do with lawyers. For example if you fail to put your trademark on all your wares, a rival company via their lawyers will quickly trample your trademark. Without lawyers of your own, you will not be able to stop this.

Yes you are right. Someone besides a lawyer likely decided to make the hole a trademark, however it was likely a lawyer who advised that they need to put it on every piece to strengthen their trademark. Since it makes little sense on this piece, "blame it on the lawyers." ;)

zenheretic, I really must disagree with you.

I think it was likely a marketing professional and/or a branding consultant who advised that they should put it on every piece.

There's a design professional in my family. I spend quite a bit of time with her and others in that profession, and related fields.

That's where the idea came from. :)

Does anyone know if the production Perrin will have a tapered tang like in the prototype?

That IS expensive. His La Griffe's are expensive too. I guess we are paying for his name, kind of like buying a Tiffany diamond.

I think in ted's post it said that the tang won't be tapered but will be drilled to reduce weight.

I don't like the hole but it won't stop me buying the knife, the bigger version is my fave knife.

Fred's Griffe's are not expensive for custom knives, especially if you buy direct from him...

It's the dealers that add to the price that jack up the costs...

I love the looks of the knife (except the hole) but I 'm not sure about the functionality.
In how many different grips can you comfortably use it?
I know Fred is into tactical knives and I'm absolutely not.
I see no use for tactical knives
But if I was in the foreign legion ...

Darn. I love the look of the tapered tang, but few makers and fewer manufacturers make knives with tapered tangs.

The bigger Perrin bowie wasn't nearly this expensive. I'm guessing it's the extra work involved in making and fitting the handle compared to injection molding one around the tang.

BTW, I hear that they are starting to ship. SFO has them to play with if you're in Colorado.

I suppose I shouldn't comment on the manufacturing of this knife since I don't know much about and don't want to disrespect a company I really like.

Still, it's VG10, there are no moving parts, even the RM Martin / Spyderco Kumo you can get on the 'street' for around $125 give or take. I still think FP just wants a bigger cut to have his name associated. Of course, it's within his right to make a buck. Just don't know if this knife is priced to move.

The Micarta handle is a more expensive way to go

than, for example, the handle material on the Temperance

But I have no idea how they price some of these,
including this

Micarta is not more expensive then G-10.

A similar knife, a BM Nimravus Cub in 154CM, with G-10, also a full tang, costs $145 (BM site).

Strange for Spyderco, but the Street Beat really seems to be overprised.

I'm saying -

I have no idea how they price these.

The number, to me, does seem high.
But we really don't have all the info yet IMO

Any idea how I can contact him as I want to buy a full sized street bowie and I'm in europe so would prefer not to go thru szabo inc. if possible?
