So, the first pics of the Templar have appeared. It seems to be a barndoor hinge jack. Interesting if nothing else. Anyone else see it yet?

I dunno what to think of this one, but at least GEC is thinking outside the box. Maybe it'll grow on me. What a barndoor hinge trapper jack has to do with a knight of some crazy religious military order from the 1100s is a bit of a mystery, but what the heck.

It does stand out with that bolster treatment. But other than that what are we getting here that isn't already offered by the #48 single blade?

I like it. I'll probably pick one up in black micarta when they're out. Any word on the length?

No, don't like this one at all it looks contrived. Like one of those mock up models that never go into production.....(but it has!)

Never mind, GEC makes a comprehensive range-wouldn't be right to like everything.

William, Im sorry, but for the very first time Im going to argue with you on that :), I can see that Bolster treatment on Ebony and also jigged bone.

I like the fact that GEC is doing something different. It isn't a lot different, but enough different to set their knives apart from the usual offerings.

I kind of like it...not sure I like the scales. I sit around and doodle at times and I drew up a knife the other day. I put a fleur de lis on each of the bolsters (similar to this barn door). I was thinking it would look cool in ebony or ivory micarta.

I have to agree with this. In fact I really do not care for this Templar pattern at all, but I do appreciate that GEC stretches the imagination at times. They're not punching out that same old patterns all the time like Case does.

Well, that's certainly different. I kinda like the barndoor hinge thing, but not the acrylic. Do the "hinges" overlap the scales, or will the handles be cut around them with the "hinges" flush? Because if the latter is the case, I could see a lot of cracks in bone coming from that.

Also, what's the length? If it's under 4" closed, and they make 2 blade version with one wharncliffe blade, I'd be in for one. Really no interest otherwise though.

It certainly is different, but I am not a fan. It appears to have flat, slab sided scales which just does not seem right compared to a regular #48.

Lawdy, Lawdy, Lawdy, it's too dang Gaudy.:thumbdn:

Even with plain, ebony, scales it'd be too dang Gaudy.

This one is not for me.

It's always interesting to experiment with new ideas. Some great discoveries are made that way. Who's to say what shape a bolster might be - fleur de lis (above ref), circle, diamond, spiral, whatever?

However, I'm not getting the hinged thing. That cap looks like the head of a spiked battle ax. Btw, a quick google showed some hinged bolsters, but only on toothpicks.

I don't find it particularly appealing. I am curious to see what variations they do with this pattern.

It's great that GEC is trying new things. There's a lot to be gained with that attitude and I wish them luck. I hope they sell many knives and find commercial encouragement (i.e., profitability) to continue exploring. Unfortunately, for me that is a very unattractive knife, no matter what handle material they put on it.

Can a locking version be far behind?
