I posted previously about some design feedback for my new grinder (many thanks to the feedback you'll provided). Well, here is the completed build. I think for my first grinder build it turned out great. There are a couple things I would like to modify if/when I make another one - both to make it better as well as easier to build. But for a first prototype I have no complaints - it runs great. My nephew uses a KMG and says he would rather have this one!

Right now it runs with about 1mm belt wobble which you can really only notice on slow speeds (no jerking on startup or anything - pretty smooth otherwise). I'm still working on getting it adjusted to be wobble free though - I won't give up! It does run nearly vibration free though - I'm sure the Baldor motor had a little something to do with that!

I have yet to build a tool rest - I'm going to make a quick fixed rest today and an adjustable one after Christmas.

Here's the motor side. The dropdown coming off the tension arm hooks onto the base when the arm is fully compressed. This keeps the arm down while changing belts.

Here's the belt side. The platen wasn't really adjusted right in this pic - it should be pushed in a little more and the tension arm would be higher.

Here's the platen. If I ever get a mill I'll clear out between the angle holes for full angle adjustability.

Here's the tracking mechanism. I originally wanted a slightly different mechanism design - but this was easier to make without a mill.

On/Off speed control mounted up on the wall:

Here it is in horizontal mode. No extra mechanism needed other than the support post that screws into one of the tool arm tightening holes. Built the bench this weekend to hold it. The grinder itself is mounted through the top plywood through some 3/16" angle iron welded onto the stand.

Better pic of the underside when horizontal. I could have changed the dimensions somewhat and made it not need a hole in the table - but that would have raised the belt height while in the horizontal mode and wasn't something I desired. I wanted to keep the belt height when horizontal the same as the middle of the platen when vertical.

Last shot in horizontal mode.

Congratulations!! Obviously a perfectionist; it shows in your build.

If you can take this and put it into the knives you build you will have something.

Regards, Fred

One of the best thought out grinder builds I've seen

Very nice. Imagine this grinder with a rubber drive wheel and rubber platen wheels of different sizes. On a bench where you could get all the way around to utilize all wheels in the horizontal mode.

You will find the grinder extremely useful in all aspects of knife making - you did a GREAT job of building. Congrats!

Looks like a very well thought out and executed build. FWIW, I used a jigsaw and some files to cut out the arc on my flat platen frame when I build my NWGS. Seemed to work just fine.

i like how the tilting hinge plate doesn't take up a ton of room on the bench. very nice.

yes! Hardcore Maxmizer style.

Great looking grinder, well done! Wish I had your skills. Looks a lot like the grinder I bought from Oregonblademaker, but I loike that you have room for 4 different tool arms. Mine only has 2. I can think of a few additions and jigs if I has another arm.

If I may offer a suggestion, the controller on the wall is a good idea, but it looks like it's right in the path of your sanding dust? I may be wrong.

Have fun!

thank you for posting follow up pictures. the machine looks to be very solid and well built. you nailed the clearance on the tool pockets, that alone is impressive without a mill.

Cool! Looks like it'd be a very solid grinder. One thing I like is the idler wheel lock you've got to make belt and tooling changes, might have to think about making something like that for my KMG.

It is a beauty!!!! Definitely not a rat-grinder like mine :)
Seriously, one of the best build i have ever seen. The platen system is very well designed as it provide a ton of knuckles clearance.
I like very much also the bench underneath...and the figured wood you used as shelves.

Agreed looks like a great looking grinder... Only advice I would add is get some metal flashing and line the wooden shelves . You probably only need to do the immediate areas that will be in contact with flying hot metal .. The steel embers when your hogging out. I have a complete metal table with a full sheet of galvanized metal to protect sparks from getting on my shelves . Great Job !
