Just wanted to intro. myself and say hi. Been lurking and reading all the info I can find. Been engraving for 51 years professionally and been bitten by the knife bug. Looks like I'm hell bent on making a folder as my first project. A maker named Ron Best (two time winner of Cronk award) lives just fifteen miles from me who has offered to assist me with his knowledge --- And, Travis Daniels (post vice pres. of n.C. guild) has offered to help me also. With these guys behind me, I'm sure I can at least make some that will cut my finger with wich I'm confident I'll accomplish many times. I will probably be asking some not to bright questions but please bear with me. Best regards to all, Ken

Yeah... reckon I may have heard of those fellers ;) they might be able to help you.

51 years as an engraver? PLEASE show some of your work.

I know the truth, you've bought every engraving tool there is and now want to buy some more? :p

Welcome to BF.

Ken, welcome I know of your work and it is the tops. I believe you worked as a MS engraver for Winchester and Colt. While working with Winchester did you know Art Ambrosi? I am very happy and honored to have such a talented and skilled artist joining our forum.

Welcome, Ken!:)
Please post progress pictures along the way...videos are always nice...
Would love to see your engraving...do you have a website? Please share the link here, if possible.;)
Looking forward to seeing your Art!

Quick, run! Make this you first and last post. Go see a therapist, a hypnotist, or some other expert at deprogramming one's desire.

Repeat after me...

"I do not want to make knives. I hate knife making! I will avoid sharp object, hardware and tool store and other knife makers. I will not read magazines, books or knife forums. I will not stock pile metal, bone, antler, wood, etc."

Looking forward to seeing some of your work, how about some of your engraving as one of your first few post, I can wait on the knife, but I do love engraving,

Welcome to BF,
Home of the knife Khnuts, collectors, and makers alike.

I had a good chat with Ken yesterday. He seems like a fairly normal guy, but we shouldn't hold that against him.:D

He sent me some engraving photos. I like his style. I really like the frog shootin' match.
I may have him do a sword I am working on.

Stacy

Thanks for the warm welcome folks and thanks Stacy for posting the pictures. Yep, sure enough ---- I'm hooked and kind of glad of it. After looking at and engraving guns for 51 years, knives are a welcomed distraction !! Ken

I suppose everyone needs a hobby!
Welcome to BF
That frog shooting match is great! is that a falling block it's on?

Mr. Page --- it is a large Martini Enfield tilting block action. It was given to me as a trashed out action --- I just wanted to prove that I could ressurect it & keep it from going to the trash heap. Glad you liked the frog scene, I call it the frogmoor rifle. Ken

A.SHARP ----- yeah I know what you mean ---- he's as crazy as an outhouse rat. He came to an engravers get together I held a few weeks back and kept everyone laughing. I visited his shop & after a few hours picked out a blank he had and made arrangements to have him finish it with 416 bolsters (fore&aft) of my design with a Gabon ebony scale. Will gold inlay this piece & scroll up to suit my taste. Also had him pick out a double edged dagger that I will display inlaying an Eagles head in 24ct. gold at his guild meeting in Oct. Perhaps you might join us ? Yep, Travis and y'all have certainly got me hooked --- now what am I going to do with all those knives that are going to start living in my shop ? Ken

Fantastic Ken! I especially like the cape buffalo and the eagle. Great stuff! Maybe we can pick your brains for folks that want to do some engraving. Thanks!!

Thanks for the kind words but, keep in mind that these are only snapshots and there is more detail than meets the eye. I'll be happy to talk to anyone who calls (910-221-5288) but please remember that I'm still green behind the ears. I won't be familar with certain terms or makers -- just be patient with me. I'm easy to contact as I'm in the shop seven days a week. Best regards to all, Ken

You're already in the shop seven days a week, I don't know if making knives would actually make your life any worse.... having already come to the dark side many years ago, I bet you welcome the opportunity to stockpile more tools and materials! I want to try some engraving soon, and I'm glad that another pro at this has joined up at the Forums. Welcome!
