When I put in a new bench recently, I knew that my vise was going to be too high for hand sanding the way that it's comfortable for me. I had built a standard "knife maker's vise" for something to do in TIG class, but really had no desire to use it over my other set-up.

But a couple months ago I realized I could use the base like a universal receiver, and then be able to make "stems" for whatever I want to put in the base.

I put formica on a bench that I had originally built specifically for my buffer, and welded up brackets so it could be screwed to the wall and RIGID for stuff like hand-sanding.

I needed some extra bright light too, so I made a new light base for a cheap Halogen light.

Here you can see the "knife maker's vise" in the center, and some "attachments" to either side of it.

I use a Panavise for some things, but not so much so that I could warrant dedicated bench space. So it was a perfect candidate for this set-up. The "stem" is schedule 80 pipe with a piece of plate welded to it for bolting the vise onto.

I turned channels in the schedule 80 pipe stems, so that they won't get marred up from the bolt.

Here's the light base, its foundation is rectangular tubing with the ends welded up and I filled it with sand. The rest is just some square tubing, some scrap sheet I cut into strips, two 5/16-18 bolts tacked in place and two threaded handles.

I can aim it wherever I want. :)

Great Idea ,Nick. I like the idea of using a tool base that is already taking up bench space. This one is going in my new shop.

I am definitely stealing some of these ideas.

I'll just have to make a second blade sanding holder for doing integral bolster Chefs knives.

Right now I have a 2x4 of end with a notch removed for the bolster that just gets stuck in a vice.

I love the interchangeable vise, jig set up:thumbup: I am going to have to set something like that up once I get my mini shop finished.

Nick, when are you comming out to help me organize MY shop!
Please!
Mace

Looks great to do it with, Nick. I'm hoping I will catch your attention to answer if you have worked with CPMS35VN and have tried a satin finish on it. I've read where some say it works well for a satin finish. I have found it grinds well and without difficulty but when I go to the hand finishing it gets a "dirty" looking finish. I've tried the polishing thing on the buffer and it too looks "cloudy". If you have an answer or another viewer please comment. Frank

nice.. I just did the same thing with a shop light like that. But then it melted by handle off. :-) Those things get hot eh?

How about adding a sanding block guide, to keep the sanding strokes parallel. I have one made out of a strip of hardboard, attached to the wooden block that the blade sits on, and projecting an inch above it. Prevents fish hooks and other sanding mistakes. Got the idea from a pic on one of the forums.

Hey Nick... that's a really cool idea; one base for multiple tools. If you have time, though, I'd love to see more detail on the attachment you used to grind the clip on the KMG.

Ok, is there an option on here to automatically subscribe to all the threads that Nick starts? ;)
Good stuff!

Great idea and super job you did on them as usual!!

Very nice, Nick, but didn't you forget the guide rods? ;)

Thanks guys! :) My dad always tells me I need to produce stuff like this and sell it. I ALWAYS laugh and tell him, "Hell no."

My Dad- "Why not?!?! People could really use something like that!!!"

Me- "Yea dad, and they are custom knife makers. They are do-it-your-selfers, and/or cheap bastards. So they would either make it themselves, or bitch about the price and never actually purchase one.!!!" ;) :p :D

So instead I post it here and figure if somebody can make use of the idea, or make something better... then YeeHaw. :)
