When I put in a new bench recently, I knew that my vise was going to be too high for hand sanding the way that it's comfortable for me. I had built a standard "knife maker's vise" for something to do in TIG class, but really had no desire to use it over my other set-up.
But a couple months ago I realized I could use the base like a universal receiver, and then be able to make "stems" for whatever I want to put in the base.
I put formica on a bench that I had originally built specifically for my buffer, and welded up brackets so it could be screwed to the wall and RIGID for stuff like hand-sanding.
I needed some extra bright light too, so I made a new light base for a cheap Halogen light.
Here you can see the "knife maker's vise" in the center, and some "attachments" to either side of it.
I use a Panavise for some things, but not so much so that I could warrant dedicated bench space. So it was a perfect candidate for this set-up. The "stem" is schedule 80 pipe with a piece of plate welded to it for bolting the vise onto.
In the receiver.
The hand sanding fixture
I turned channels in the schedule 80 pipe stems, so that they won't get marred up from the bolt.
Here's the light base, its foundation is rectangular tubing with the ends welded up and I filled it with sand. The rest is just some square tubing, some scrap sheet I cut into strips, two 5/16-18 bolts tacked in place and two threaded handles.
I can aim it wherever I want.
Putting it all to good use!!!
