New hand sanding set-up and light

Thanks guys! :) My dad always tells me I need to produce stuff like this and sell it. I ALWAYS laugh and tell him, "Hell no."

My Dad- "Why not?!?! People could really use something like that!!!"

Me- "Yea dad, and they are custom knife makers. They are do-it-your-selfers, and/or cheap bastards. So they would either make it themselves, or bitch about the price and never actually purchase one.!!!" ;) :p :D

So instead I post it here and figure if somebody can make use of the idea, or make something better... then YeeHaw. :)
Not true, Nick. there are a couple of guys on here who have managed to sell some knifemaking fixtures. Many of us have barely enough tools an machinery to make knives, much less stuff like that.;)

I'm stealing these pics from Lorien... well kind'a. I took them and edited them all, but he's hosted them for our thread about building his knife. (and I'm posting them here since I know many of you aren't looking at that thread).

I made another giz-wiz for the universal base. I like to hand finish my clips/false-edges where I can see them clearly. If you can rotate the blade, it really helps (me anyway).

So here's the new attachment. It's made from the piece of scrap that was left over from building the first sanding fixture. I cut one flange off of a piece of wide flange. This makes a perfect sanding backer, because it's VERY rigid/stiff because of the rib left over by the web, yet it's lightweight.

I shaped one end much like the other sanding fixture and drilled/tapped some holes for support screws.

Then I use the Oxy/Acet torch to cut the other end of the wide-flange piece down to a rectangle, then cut a matching rectangle out of the square tubing. Then I put them together and welded it all up.

This is a very solid set-up, it just doesn't have as much support from underneath as the other sanding fixture. But I don't push very hard while sanding out a clip. When I'm sanding the main bevels, I lean on the blade with as much of the 245 pounds as I can. ;)

Here it is in the fixture.

If you start pushing down on a blade that only has one clamp on it, and is set-up at a downward angle, you'll push the blade right off the fixture.

So the two screws near the end have the thread ground off their ends so they can be elevated to support the blade, like this:

Here it is in use :)

Another super idea and product!!

Thats awesome! Thanks for the chance to win on of these complete sanding set ups!!! I'll take #63....:D:thumbup:
Mace

P.S. Nick Wheeler is dreamy!

Sorry folks, I had already picked #63 and then it was drawn in the final drawing... so I went ahead and shipped this thing to myself. :foot: ;) :D

Finally got around to making one of these, to be held in a vise. I made two extra, one has a messed up front hole. These are ready for tapping, 1/4-20, and welding. Anyone with these capabilities that wants one I'll ship one out to you free o' charge. First one gets the one with good front hole. Just post here and I'll get you one.

I'll take one if you still have it, Thanks a bunch!!

I have a buddy who can weld for me. Would you mind shipping to canada? If so I'll take it! I can help out with shipping, just fire me a pm! =)

Thanks!

Ben & Wolff send me your info and I'll send em out. GTH11 I have a bunch of scrap material I made these out of. If I get around to making some more I'll contact you to see if you are still in need.

Here is what it looks like welded up.

Thank you sir, I look forward to using this badboy!!

There goes me! I really want a good hand sanding setup, the way I do it just kills me. I don't have any room though! Only place left in my house for something is my bedroom lol.

Carl - Good on ya, brother! Those look pretty nifty for sure! Hand sanding is my weakest area by a long shot. I'm 29 yrs old and have arthritis in my hands bad enough that I can only hand sand for about 5 minutes before I can't grip anything anymore! Guess I'll stick to machine/scotchbrite finishes :)

Wanna say Nick your methods are excellent. I dont have a jig or anything but instituted as much as I could of your techniques after watching your video and wow. Cut my sanding time by probably 70% and I was able to get the plunge line and everything to look so much better then what I was getting before. Thanks.

I am in this boat. I wish I could weld and had the tools to make something like this because I am in need of a sanding fixture and vice.

This is a two year old thread, but has really good info in it. Just read it and send Nick an email/PM if you have some questions.
