I'm stealing these pics from Lorien... well kind'a. I took them and edited them all, but he's hosted them for our thread about building his knife. (and I'm posting them here since I know many of you aren't looking at that thread).
I made another giz-wiz for the universal base. I like to hand finish my clips/false-edges where I can see them clearly. If you can rotate the blade, it really helps (me anyway).
So here's the new attachment. It's made from the piece of scrap that was left over from building the first sanding fixture. I cut one flange off of a piece of wide flange. This makes a perfect sanding backer, because it's VERY rigid/stiff because of the rib left over by the web, yet it's lightweight.
I shaped one end much like the other sanding fixture and drilled/tapped some holes for support screws.
Then I use the Oxy/Acet torch to cut the other end of the wide-flange piece down to a rectangle, then cut a matching rectangle out of the square tubing. Then I put them together and welded it all up.
This is a very solid set-up, it just doesn't have as much support from underneath as the other sanding fixture. But I don't push very hard while sanding out a clip. When I'm sanding the main bevels, I lean on the blade with as much of the 245 pounds as I can.
Here it is in the fixture.
If you start pushing down on a blade that only has one clamp on it, and is set-up at a downward angle, you'll push the blade right off the fixture.
So the two screws near the end have the thread ground off their ends so they can be elevated to support the blade, like this:
