New Hatchet, and it's a JK!

Ok, I weighed it three times. Each time it came up at one pound. I'm not convinced it it 100% dead on accurate, but it is close if it is not one pound.

Thanks! A pound is a very reasonable weight. I would have guessed 20-22 oz. based upon how sturdy it looks. My GB Mini weighed 12.8 oz. (with sheath) on the postal scale at my old office---so pretty close to the same.

I think the GB probably puts more of its total weight into the head for chopping power. However, with Stomper's hatchet you never have to worry about handle failure. I like it a lot.

I wonder how the two small hatchets compare for splitting kindling? The thicker head of the GB might give more wedging action, but you could baton the haft of Stomper's if the head got stuck---and I wouldn't do that to a wood haft. Who knows, I may need yet another axe!

I appreciate the info,

Yeah, I do like the fact that I could baton the hell out of the handle and not think twice about it, and if I had to it could easily hold up to prying back and forth. My GB's (I don't have a mini) have a pretty thin bevel to the cutting edge so making that really thin kindling would probably be easier with the GB. Although Stomper's hatchet has very decent bevel and has a slight convex so it will push it's way though the wood nicely. Of course when it comes that really thin kindling a a knife will do just fine. For the big stuff I think this will compare pretty well to a GB.

Yes, there's quite a bit to be said about having a nearly indestructible tool. I have one of Jeff Morgan's Small Utility Bowies (1095) with a bloodwood handle that would be a good match for that hatchet.
