Going back to the sand box and looking to take a heavy duty folder with me. Does not need to be 10" long, lol. Last time used a MOD CQD Mark II, served me well, just curious if there is anything else out there. I have heard about the Kershaw ZT 0400, but still have not seen one in person.
Looking for something with a partially serrated blade. Any ideas? Wanting to keep it around 150.00., if possible.

The Spyderco ParaMilitary comes to mind. Bulletproof lock, good steel, nice size and shape, plus it's not too expensive. I carry mine every day. Best of luck to you and thank you for your service.

I also like the Buck/Strider folders pretty well. I can`t imagine a more heavy duty folder than that. The only downside is they are fugly. I don`t carry mine to impress anyone with fancy looks that`s for sure.

I don`t know about the newer models since i bought mine a few years ago, but the sharp edge radius of the G-10 scales could be an issue for extended/frequent use. I know this was a cost cutting measure. I softened the radius myself on a belt sander. Doesn`t look pretty and it`s not perfectly even, but it did the trick and the knife is twice as comfortable for extended use.

Here are a few others that I like.

Al Mar SERE 2K
CRKT Kasper/Crawford Pro
Microtech Lightfoot LCC

il put a 3rd up for the buck strider, ive had the tanto 880, the tarani and the drop point. all worked well, no complaints and the tanto performed EXCEPTIONALLY when needed.

The 0400 is a fine choice in my opinion. I like it a lot and in the event that you did end up with the fixed blade 0100 model you have a pocket built in on that sheath made to carry the folder if you wanted to. Also, the handles on both are very similarly shaped so there is no adjusting grip to change from one to the other. The 0200 matches up perfectly to the 0100 handle though.

My son used a Kershaw BlackOut over there in Iraq and said the assisted opener mechanism was not a problem at all so I'm sure that the assisted spring mechanism can do it. Manual opening may be less maintainance though. The Buck Strider is a fine knife so long as you go with the 880. I wouldn't consider any of the others in the Buck Strider line up to be a heavy duty knife except the 881 in folders but its kind of small. None of the other models have very impressive locks on them in my opinion. I'd go with something else sooner than those. Something like an Emerson CQC12 may also be a good choice and since it can be Waved open it has some similar assisted opening advantages.

By the way I sent you an email. Contact me.

How about the RAT-1 folder. Does anyone know anything about that knife? I like Ontario and the price seems low compared to most of the previously mentioned knives. I know BM and Spyderco make great knives but just don't want to spend the $$. I'm I making a mistake not holding out for one of the above mentioned knives?

How about a Emerson Commander? Real nice, heavy duty and reliable. Check them out.

Some people dont like the fit in the hand and some dont like the blade shape, but I love both. If you need a heavy duty knife try and check one out. I hear nothing but great stuff about the 200 and 400 as well though.

earlier on the forums i read nothing but complaints about the buck strider knives: i thought the locks were supposed to be really weak

Look for used Skirmish, very h.d. and robust. Frame lock and nice looking to boot. I would also second the Commander. My favorite edc bar none. There is a fella selling them on ebay for 99 bucks plus shipping! I bought two and couldn't be happier. The pse I have is the thick liner lock too. Good luck and keepem sharp

a used bradley alias-i have a partially serrated alias2 and i love it-for me the blade design was better for edc than the skirmish i had

a ruckus, mini rukus -was in the lotto pass around last year-one heck of a knife-

Strider gives a pretty good servicemen's discount , SNG or SMF would put you ahead of the curve . The ZT's would work good , if you like the style . A Benchmade 520 , or 710 ,or a Spyderco Manix would also fill the bill .

Of those mentioned already, I own a Manix and have used a Rukus for a week in a passaround. Both make really good HD folders. The Spyderco Manix is wider in your pocket, but feels better in my hands than the Rukus. They both have similar edge and blade geometry, thus similar cutting ability. I like choils for precision work which the Manix has, and the Rukus doesn't. The Rukus has more blade length and is smoother, but the Manix is very smooth for a lockback. Both are incredibly strong. The Manix is cheaper by about $50, but the Rukus has slightly better fit and finish. In the end I chose the Manix due to the lower cost and how it fit my hand better, but it would be hard to go wrong with either.
