New Here Advice appreciated

O1 doesn't sound like a good choice if you're really that concerned with rust. 3V does fairly well when cared for. I'd also recommend Sleipner, which is not quite as wear resistant as 3V but very tough and easy to sharpen. Elmax is a pretty good choice if you want something to hold an edge for quite a while.

Take a look through what the many knife makers have to offer here:
https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/for-sale-fixed-blades.754/

Lots of suitable outdoors knives posted on there daily. I'm sure you'll find something that meets your needs.

Great, didn't even think of that. As a basic member I can purchase bur not sell correct? The bear paw knife on there has the sleipner amd looks good.

You can buy but not list to sell, as I understand it.

Funny you mention that knife by bearpaw. If you mean the bushcraft/hunter, I almost bought that one. I've been on a bit of a hunt for good fixed blades lately.

Oh and BTW, welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Ale4me Those look pretty good but a little more than I was looking at spending. I can't find either one in stock alot of 4.5s

First, welcome to Bladeforums.

There is nothing wrong with LT Wrights offerings. I love their stuff. Whatever you get its going to require some care, even the more stainless steels.

If you want a good rust proof blade you can get a Spyderco Salt Series blade. Very handy in general. Not really a bush blade but I thought I'd mention it since you mentioned salt environment.

Boxer.45, thank you. I have checked out the Spyderco knives but for some reason have just never jumped on board with them. Although I probably will pick one up for when I'm canoeing or throwing the net.

LT Wright offers the GNS in AEB-L which I am really liking so far ... it is a stainless steel and very easy to get a sharp edge on ... and surprisingly holds an edge alot better than I thought.

I'm not sure what other models they offer in AEB-L but you may want to look at it.

D3V if you take care of it I haven't ever had any issues ... but I'm not in Florida either ...

Thanks for that info. Looks good and at a great price point. I'll look into that AEB-L and checl the difference there a not much of a price difference between that and the 3v

If you really like M390 ... the Bradford 4.5 is a great knife ... I believe they sell starting at $239.00 direct from Bradford's site and the ship quickly ... might be a bit over your $200.00 ... but they are a bargain at the $239.00 price.

And they have great customer service ... and you won't find a kinfe sharper out of the box in my experience.

I just saw where usa made blade has LT Wright GNS in AEBL and mountain texture handles for just under two hundred. The Becker 16 has been mentioned already. What a Fiddleback production version of the Kephart, still a bit smaller blade at about 3.5 inches than what you may want, but versatile blade.

You could get two knives like an OKC black bird (154 CM) and a Gerber Strongarm (420 HC) for the heavy beater. Both are stainless steel for example.

Really you came to the right place to ask for advice!

And Welcome!

Thanks for the info. That mountain micarta looks pretty cool. I think if I was going to get a smaller blade I'd pick up the Lionsteel M4 . I by no means have any clue but the handle on the fiddleback kephart looks thin from the photos. It could just be the pic though.

Thanks Roguer, I'll check those out. I just picked up a Gransfors Bruks so probably just one for now.

where are you, Tampa area? salt isnt the only issue near the gulf. the wet humid climate near the gulf and most of the state is also an issue. I use all kinds of steels. I just keep up with maintaining them. if ya dont mind the bit of work doing that, pick what ya want.

Yes, a bit south of Tampa. We travel hike/camp all around Fl. And GA up to N.C.

gotcha.

do some of those same places myself sometimes. due to work, property I own that has to be checked on and family.

if ya dont mind a budget option.....look into mistwalkers schrade 42s. 1095 and a coating that doesnt come off easily or at all. depending what you are cutting. ffg and thick but still slicey tip. he did a post here on how it came to be. it's a great tale of hard living in the south and knife needs and the design.
