I thought you guys would enjoy this shop work in progress. I started off on my porch, upgraded to a tent and then a carport... this will be my first dedicated knifemaking shop! Currently I am awaiting electrical inspection then I will insulate and sheetrock the shop.

I started by clearing an area on my flattest piece of land. I live on the side of a mountain! I used a machete, it seemed appropriate to clear the land for a knifemaking shop. :D

I posted this over on my subforum but with all the discussion about shops lately I thought it would be fun to post it here. Any suggestions or comments are welcome!

12x24 - I plan on an 8x12 grinding room and a 16x12 clean room for kydex, glue-up and finishing.

I'm up and running!

I have to get everything official then I can insulate and sheetrock it. After that I plan on probably doing an epoxy floor right over the OSB t&g flooring .

I have 4 separate 20 amp 120 circuits with 12 120 outlets at 4' high on the walls. There is also one 20 amp circuit on the ceiling with three outlets for shop lights. For 240 volts there are three separate 20 amp circuits.

I started a workbench while I am awaiting inspection. It's over 7.5' long! It will be for my grinders, I will likely add more bracing and remove the front 2x4. It isn't tall enough to roll a toolbox under but I feel the more open design could be more useful. I'll probably build another 8' bench that will be tall enough for my mechanics style rolling tool box to fit under.

Sweet! 12'x24' ? Very happy for you!

That will be nice having a separate grinding room. The real challenge will be to keep from moving in before you're done!

I look forward to seeing this progress!

Thanks! Yes 12x24 total. I am very happy to have the two rooms. I hear you about moving in, I was a littler early on my bench but I can't wait to get it all done! :D

Nice setup Daniel. What will you be using for ventilation & exhaust?

Thanks!

I hope to get a 2hp dust collector from Grizzly, maybe a 1hp wall mounted ones as well and I'm not too sure about exhaust. I'm keeping my kiln and oils in my old carport shop so that will help out a lot. I consider some kind of fume hood for my glue up and my-carta building. I'm thing a large carbon filter recirculating the air couldn't hurt either.

Looks good Dan. Looks bloody cold in your neck of the woods mate. Its a balmy 37 deg c here today.

I think we should all take bets on how long it is before Daniel thinks his shop is too small and is wanting a larger one!!! :D I'll give him 3 days after he gets everything moved in....:p

Nice shop Daniel, can't wait to see it finished! I hope to have one that size or larger one of these days!!!

Hells yes Daniel!!!! Looks awesome, congrats :)

Thanks Mike! I'm excited, we will hopefully have a room ready for the baby before she is born! :D

Looks great Dan!

Thanks Sam! Much appreciated.

Thanks! It is cold but we are getting lucky here on the mouintain with very little snow this winter, we get 15' on average here. It was 5F when I got up, that's -15C!

Well if I had your shop I would have to have more windows! That way I could just sit in there and look at the scenery all day and get nothing done!:rolleyes:

Ah I miss the mountains all except for one thing damn, it's cold up there this time of year! Had things been different 35yrs ago when I got out of service I would probably be right there where your at now! Then my fused back acts up and jerks me back to reality. It has been a mild winter here in Florid!

Hey congrats on the new workshop. Looks like its going to be really nice when you get it all finished! Seriously I would have to have a big window in front of my main bench, the scenery is too pretty to spend shut up in all the time!

Thanks! I considered a bunch of windows but I need to keep the cost down so I went with the one on the sunny side. I'd be distracted while grinding looking at all the wildlife!

I had deer scare me a few times when I was grinding in the carport this summer, they will walk right up but only when I'm grinding! The KMG mesmerizes them, lol!

Nice work, Daniel.

Thanks Greg! I can't wait to get moved in.

Great video Dan! I've been waiting for an update like this. It's looking great!

Thanks Jonny! I have been super busy trying to get the shop finished up, my wife is at 9 months so I need to get moved in soon! :D

Geeze Daniel, your commute is just a bit shorter than mine! But I would much rather make knives full time! Hey maybe my knife will be one of the first out of your new shop!
