I am thinking of becoming a dealer for these chests, it seems to me they would be perfect for knife collections. They are very well built with dovetail construction and finished on all four sides. They come in many sizes and in mahogany and ebony finish. This ten drawer model is 52 inches high and retails for just under $2000.00. We are considering configurations for drawer partitions at this time. If you are interested or would like to see more, please let me know. Thanks Mark

To keep things in perspective, I keep my knives in a make-it-your-self jewelry box from IKEA. I believe that my wife spent all of $15 on it and she even put it together for me. ;)

How many will it hold? This one will hold hundreds of knives. It's like fine furniture for your knives. Seems like a $1,500.00 knife should be in more than just a $15.00 box:D:D

For sure! But I only have enough knives to fill it. Kind of a good way to keep my collection down to only the 30 or 40 knives I really like :) well, plus the ones in my truck, and my tool box and sock drawer and that box in my closet and.... you get the idea.

Very nice looking cabinet BTW. I think a lot of serious collectors would be interested. Does it lock?

You might want to give Tracy Mickley a shout. His USAKnifemaker site offers Gerstner chests, so he could likely give you some advice about what the market for those is like.

Thanks, we have models that lock

Thanks for the link, I have one of the Gerstner chests that I use personally, they are pretty nice, a little more on the utilitarian side. I am thinking more in terms of nicer den or office furniture.

I was hoping to generate interest in these chests, not really open a discussion on ways to store knives, If someone would like to open a thread on ways we display and store knives in the chat side, I am open to that. Thanks

Great looking chest. It would be great if it could lock from behind or somewhere out of sight. It may sound like a lot of money to some ;however, Its very nice looking and it is easy on the eye. I dont mind gun safes in the house but my wife would like this better. My insurance will not cover certain items if they are not locked.

We have some locking models, I will certainly stress the insurance/locking thing in the next meeting. Yes, it is nice looking, it is more of a pride-of-ownership, or family heirloom thing. Thanks for looking

Very nice Mark !!

Are these solid wood?
In other words, no pressed board with a laminate face.

Thanks in advance.... :)

I'm interested and would like to see what other sizes are available.
can these be custom ordered to specified outside dimensions ?
locking is important.
i have over 3000 knives and storage with easy access is a problem.
the only thing better than what you show, would be a large fireproof safe with lots of shallow slide out shelves, but i can' find any such item despite lots of looking.

They are made with solid wood and high density poplar plywood with Maple or Mahogany (your choice) veneers on the larger panels. I am going to post more pictures and info. later. Thanks Mark

I am not a collector, I just make them. But I would think along the same lines you thought. Someone who is willing and able to spend upwards of $1500 on a knife, might want a nice place to keep them and have them on easy display. Some collectors have tens of thousands of dollars in knives (or more) and leaving them laying around in shoeboxes would probably not be preferable.

Thanks for the info Mark, best wishes in your endeavor.... :)

Hi Chris, I appreciate your opinion, but this is not really the place for that, this is an advertisement area, dealers pay a little more than the normal membership fee to advertise here (though others can too). The rules at the top say, if it is not for you, walk away. Your comment can't help but change the mind of an otherwise open-minded prospective customer, Here's is where I found the rules http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/announcement.php?f=746&a=98 Thanks.

Bit harsh is it not? You are not "selling" a product, but merely fishing for advise and opinions of whether it might be an item you could sell. Your opening statement says you are thinking of selling these, not that you have the actual item for sale in stock. "I am thinking of becoming a dealer for these chests, it seems to me they would be perfect for knife collections"

Since you posted the rules this thread seems to violate three of those rules. Forum rules prevent product discussions and sales of items you do not posses..can't have it both ways, eh? Yes, "dealers" pay more, but have their own dealer's section. I understand why dealers post in this forum due to higher traffic exposure so folks might want to consider changing the rule to allow dealers to be ligit here.

I paid $4,000 for my last knife two months ago, but still find putting it away in an armoire drawer sacrilegious. Maybe if it had ebony pulls mahogany crotch veneer, ebony binding...

RULES COPIED FROM LINK:

Buyers are encouraged to ask questions, however, For Sale threads are not for product discussions. Take it elsewhere. Do not chat up a thread trying to keep it at the top of the exchange area.

Only sell items you physically own The only exception to this are Dealers taking pre-orders on new merchandise, and knifemakers taking orders for knives they will be making themselves. For all other persons, you must physically have the item you are selling before you list it.

Dealers are restricted to selling in the Dealer subsections of the Exchange. If you are purchasing items at wholesale, have a store, or tax resale certificate, you are considered a dealer and must purchase the appropriate membership.

Larry, I was trying to be as nice as a can be, I tried very hard not to be harsh. I do understand that things sometimes tend to come out differently on these things.

To be clear about my intent, I am sorry if you and others thought I was fishing for advise, I am not. In my post I asked interested people to let me know if interested. I have been approached to become a dealer and if I see enough interest I will do that. These would be "pre-orders on new merchandise" As for the rest of "my violations" it seems that in your own post, I clearly meet the exceptions to the rule. It says if I cut handle materials and sell them I must be a dealer, so I am. This area is clearly the place to sell handle materials, not the dealer section. I think "the dealer section" was intended for dealers of knives. It could be that the cabinets would have fit better in another catagory. At any rate, the rules are somewhat ambiguous but clearly this area was not meant to discuss ones preference for storing his knives, it was meant to do business. I am trying to do that. Thanks Mark

I shopped around for two years looking for a display case for my collection. I finally found what I was looking for, a custom made "map chest" with 12 drawers 1.5" high. Of course, as luck would have it, I got a fairly drastic job change the same week. So, it's in storage for a year or so. I expect to have to line the drawers and possibly partition them, but getting the chest was the main task.

I figure $2k a reasonable price to hold $100k in knives. My gun safes cost about the same, and I have no trouble justifing their cost.
