New Kershaws at Walmart!!

At least Walmart sells Kershaw (I bought 3 there :)), just try this at the other Walmarts, Macys, Target, Kohls etc. :D

I went to one WalMart last night, and they had nothing new. As an interesting side note, all of the knives in the case that had assisted opening were listed as "Not Available".

Almost bought a Vapor for $13, but I was holding out for the new ones.

Went to another one today, and not only were they sold completely out of 9mm, .40 and .45, but I asked the guy when they were putting the new knife display out and he said "Yeah, I was supposed to do that today, but eh...I'll do it tomorrow or something."

I have to go to another city this week...so I will be checking all of them on the way.

Grrrrrrr.

My first question to my old friend the salesman came back with 'Sorry, nothing new - yet. Try back in a couple of weeks when we get our new display.". The 'old' display has the Chive down to $21 and Scallion to $25 - but, of course, all have been gone for eons. Prices dated 2/13/09. That includes the Spyderco Native at $39.48 - which they ran out of last July - and will never see again, according to Spyderco, as they sold it too low. My buddy went around to help someone else - I walked around and found the Barrage, OD-1, and Zing - they had numbers on them not represented on the display - a give-away - as was the Kershaw American Flag box.

A very friendly young lady came and helped me - and I 'inspected' the trio. The largest - the Barrage - was ~$35, while the other two were ~$40. I could live without the Barrage or OD-1, but the Zing was cool. When I elected to check out there a bit later, the young lady let me look over the three Zings - and pick out the 'best'. It was worthwhile - one was too stiff, the second was off-centered, and the third is just right - just stiff enough. It should ease up a bit, too.

I am not usually an impulse buyer, but there is something neat about this knife. Which blade material was used, it isn't on the blade? Mine is new - Jan 09. Sharp - but not the razor some Kershaws are 'out of the box'. The cool grind marks on the blade body may make long term sharpening 'interesting'. The clip may go - if I keep it - which I plan to. The angled thumb studs seem superfluous - their use with the flipper may prove dangerous to the thumb's welfare. The flipper seems to work well - I'm getting close to 'locked' with my 'zings' now - just a few more hundred times will break it in - it came with oil dripping from that pivot. I assume the scales are G10 - nicely done - like the 'close' in number JYDII CB (1725 vs the Zing's 1735.) - not pocket fuzz producers like some I've handled (Buck 850 Bravo). That 1725CB is a razor!

Okay, so now you know - look at their stock yourself, if you can - the Zing was #67 at my local WallyWorld.

My local Wal-Mart put up their new knife board display yesterday, but doesn't have the Zing or Skyline in the store yet.

Quick question, does the skyline have a reversible clip for southpaws?

Planning to get either a Zing or Skyline..or sadly knowing me, BOTH!! :D

Bear claw,

The zing has liners on both sides tip up and tip down on the back handle and tip up on the front handle.

Well, after a couple of days of use, I like the Zing! Now, is it a great value? Hmmm, my wife spent ~$65 shipped for a 1725CB JYDII for my Christmas... and, she bought me a backup Spydie Native in S30V last summer for the same $43 the new knife ran. No, I guess I wouldn't put the Zing in the same list as those - they have proven to be great values. The new Sandvik steel is completely new to me - I don't know what to expect, wear-wise. I don't even know the hardness (Rc)! I don't regret it's purchase, but I'll likely see a Shallot or Lahar before I get an OD-1, etc. Still, it's nice to have some new choices.

I almost got zinged at wally world. The only reason i didnt get it is because i really want an orange one. excellent knife though, seemed to be. think i'll order an orange one tonite. :D

My local Walmart finally got around to putting out the new knife display.

The new load of Kershaws are IN.

The fellow working in that department, Brian, is actually a Kershaw fan and he was carrying a nice rainbow Leek. he was quite nice and helpful and during the course of our conversation I mentioned this forum and he wanted to know the name. I think he may venture over to see what's going on.

Anyway, I looked at the Barrage, Zing, Skyline, and the OD-1. Going in I thought that the Zing would be my choice, but I didn't like it as much in person and I thought I would. Didn't care so much for the blade profile or the ridges. Not a bad knife, of course, just not to my tasets (at least, not for now...).

I ended up buying the OD-1. They only had one in stock, so I took it.

First impression is it seems very well constructed. I like the G-10 scales (my first) a lot. The steel? Well, we will see about that over time, I suppose. The fact that it is made in the good ole USA is a big plus.

One of the reasons that I liked this particular knife over the others is the overall profile of the opened knife. My other primary EDC (other than the little Kershaw Chive) is the Camillus Cuda EDC. The profile of the OD-1 is more slender and probably more sheeple friendly. It still, however, has a fairly rugged feel.

There are some compromises. The flipper sticks out a bit farther than I imagined, but has to in order to get the necessary leverage, I suppose. The very minimal detent when closed doesn't inspire confidence. Unlike most, I prefer tip down carry, but carry as it came from the store - tip up - is probably the safest way to carry this knife. Keeps the blade tucked into the back edge of the pocket. This arrangement leaves more of the knife exposed than I like. Loose carry in the pocket is probably a bad idea.

One question... when open, the framelock moves over to maybe just a hair under 50% of the bottom end of the blade. Does that sound like a proper lockup? I thought maybe it should be just over 50%.

Overall... American made, nice materials, good construction, nice profile, pretty sharp edge, size just about as large as I want for EDC. GREAT price. Excellent value.

Thanks Kershaw (and Walmart).

Yes, that is a pretty good lockup. With a little time the lock will move
over a tad as it seats in with use. No worries, it's all good.

I picked up a Zing last night at my local Walmart. Great knife in my opinion. I have a Skyline I bought from a surplus store here a while back and I may go and get the OD-1 at Wallyworld today. Thanks for starting this thread. I'd never have thought to look at the 'mart for quality Kershaw knives.

Well, I checked my Wal Mart the other night and they had an OD-1 but no Zings. At least I know they're moing in the right direction!!

Now I just need some money that's not directed toward ammo and high capactiy magazines!!

Well, I broke down and got the OD-1. I handled the skyline, but the new steel and the flipper of the OD-1 were almost to good to pass up, especially when I found out they only had 2 OD-1's in stock. I guess the skyline will just have to wait till next week.:D

BTW beware anyone who handles the OD-1 will purchase it. If you dont have the funds for the knife, dont handle it!!!! Im only trying to help.
