My 11 year old son would like to share his humble knife collection with you including his latest addition the green handled Mora !

I took him outside today to use the Mora to help start a fire.
First he used it to get some fine tinder

Then he cut some fine shavings

now was the time to try and get a decent spark !!!

And finally we have fire....not bad for his first attempt !!!

awesome!!! way to go dad. Best to learn bushcraft skills young. Sadly, my son is only 18mos...so i'll have to wait a few before he gets his first SAK.

Way to go. It is so cool to know that you can create fire with flint and steel.
Take care,
Bryan

I had to come back and look at those pictures again! :)

I hope this thread serves as a challenge to the rest or you dads. I don't think I've ever seen a thread like this one. I hope we see more.

Mighty powerful to see.

You didn't just empower your child to have confidence in himself, you may have just saved his life!

GOOD ON YOU FOR DOING THIS.

Travis

Pit Man... you're doing good my friend....but you already knew that. Great photos as always and of a great event!

Coincidently..... my 8 yr old daughter and I were out this afternoon practicing our "skills". She carries a Victorinox SAK and a Doan mag-flint. Her SAK wouldn;t strike a spark (we already knew that) so she used my Nimravus to start the fire. She's already pretty good, but today I had to help her prep by getting some magnesium into the tinder for her, then she struck the sparks and started.

We ate eggs cookd in the shell in the fire, tater tots (pre-wrapped in alum foil), mini-sausages cooked on sharpened sticks, and she had hot chocolate and I had coffee from olicamp cups. The dogs ate the egg shells and stole 1 and 1/2 sausages (I needed to borrow that NRA Snody for some swift discipline today on a black lab!).

I wish I had a good working digi-camera to get some current pics up! The pictures of your boy have me psyched up!

At only 8 yrs old you and your daughter have me beat !!!
I'm hoping to do plenty of camping and get them sausages sizzling this summer !!!!

Well done both of you . One of the neatest things about being a dad is teaching your youngsters .

Thanks for sharing !

Awesome! A fine young man with the makings of very fine skills.
I taught my oldest, who is now 22, the basics at a very young age. He went on to surpass my skills and to win awards at different levels. He now manages to wander widely and keep himself safe and warm. Done the same with all but the 2 youngest out of six, 2 and 5 years old. Thanks for the reminder to get started again. Your son has a far nicer blade selection than I did as well, good on you for helping him be a tool user.

Thats great! I havent even lit a fire with flint and steel yet, other then a bit of tinder to see what works. :D

gibsonfan, maybe trying to play matchmaker? :)
