New Knife and Fire Starting !

Great pictures and a fine young lad! On the SAKS, you can "square off" the edges on some of the tools with a stone or diamond stone to get them to spark better. After reading about it somewhere, I did this to the inside edges of the nailfile on a small Classic and a larger Sportsman. They work very well now, especially the Sportsmans nailfile. I did the inside edges that so the tool wouldn't close with pressure. I just ran the diamond file along the thin edge, kind of like sharpening an ice skate blade - not sure if this is the best way, but worked for me.

Great collection, not humble at all!
The right tools for the job.

And the fire skills too! Way cool! ;)

Dalew, growing up my parents employed much of the same tactics, but I am still sure it was so they could relax while her trained monkeys did everything around the house!
Looking around my apartment now it looks like their idea didnt work too well, I need to find a woman, not to do housework but to whip me into shape.:D

Well done pitman and son!

It put in mind of "Survivor" (last season I believe) when the two women were competing by building a fire. They had everything supplied for them including a knife and a flint, all they had to do was race to put it together and light it. (After 30+ days there, it should be 2nd nature...)

After an hour to 1 1/2 hours of trying with a flint, they stopped them and gave them matches! (One still couldn't do it, she ran out of matches) God I laughed!!

Your son could teach those "survivors" a thing or two!

You could take a Dremel stone grinder bit that matches the radius of the firesteel and make a choil on a little used tool. The wire stripper notch on the large SAK screwdriver is a good candidate. The Tool Logic SL3 Fire has a special notch in the base of the main blade-- throws sparks like a flame thrower. You're very correct that a square edge is what is needed.

That is a great suggestion! Funny, I was looking at the wire stripper notch and thought "nah, too small" - never thought about enlarging it. This would seem to have the benfit of greater surface are making contact between the scraper and the firesteel - presumably creating more sparks?!? This should be a fun mod to try out. Thanks DaleW!

I just showed my 11 and 10 year olds this series of shots and they both competed in my make shift ' jr fire starter contest' for a new knife as a prize, which of coarse I have a never ending supply of!.  :D

Since they both did so well in this contest, they both got a small leatherman tool for there prize.:)

I dare not show him some of these replys,he will start thinking he's the next Survivor man !!!

Whoa, think about it? SURVIVOR BOY!

Film it, have him actually "teach" other kids to get interested in the outdoors....you'll be a millionaire!!

Let's get him out there building his debris hut, setting his traps, filming starts in the spring. :D

Funny you should say that I had him make a Spring snare just over a year ago when we lived in the Uk,we tested it ourselves but then took it down in case we found someones toy poodle hanging from it the following day !!!:D

"Survivor Boy" T-shirts, PSKs, Snares... his whole line of gear.
Man the money is in the endorsements and gear!!

SurvivorBoy episode 1
Urban Trapping: Rats, Squirrels and Toy Poodles. :D

I'd watch the show AND buy the T-shirt!!

So jealous of you having a son. I love my daughters, and they're not typical girlie girls. I'm the last Roy in my line too. So I gotta keep plugging till I get that boy.

It's like I told my lovely wife 26+ years ago "I may or may not be able to give you all those rug rats, but I'll never give up the tryin'!" :D

Granddaughter is 8yrs old and mentioned last year that she would like to go fishing. Never fished before. Starting a campfire with a flint is going to be something else she can learn this year.

Thanks for the ideas.

Ut oh, I think that a very young man has better lighterless fire starting skills than I do. :D
