New Knife and Fire Starting !

Her SAK wouldn;t strike a spark (we already knew that) so she used my Nimravus to start the fire.

Hey Stretch,

Why wouldn't her SAK work? Mine does (all 3 of them). A Doan firestarter uses ferrocerium and that can spark using a stone, piece of glass etc. It's the ferro material that sparks, not the knife steels, unlike when you're using flint and steel.

I know the blade on my sak doesnt work well at all, but the spine of the saw makes short work of it.

I was just gonna say that. it has to have a flat edge, all the other tools are a little rounded

Fonly,

You're right. It doesn't work as easily as the saw spine, but that's because of the sharper corners. Are you trying the spine of the blade or the cutting edge?

You may have to use a bit more pressure, but it works. (I'm using the cutting edge - to use the spine, you could square it off, a bit). I just tried it again, with some cotton - no problem.

Yeah, I've been using the cutting edge, well I did,but it wouldn't work. But it was colder, and there was probably some other effects that I wasn't aware of. I've started using the spine of the saw because it works better for me, as in a quicker result and then I also dont have to hurt the edge.

I agree with you about hurting the edge. I'm not even suggesting that you use it. The point I wanted to make is that it can work. Possibly important information in some circumstances.

Oh yeah, and dont get me wrong, wasn't trying to argue. I should almost try it again sometime and see if I can. I keep a camper model in my kit, and Thats the one I was trying it with before (the small scalpel blade)

I think in the snow, and my warm hands it may have just been too wet, and nothing would have worked, I only had it out in the back yard soo.

Hey Doc,
It won't do it, I've tried several times. I guess you're right...it should work... but it won;t and I really don;t know why. I use the spine, which is squared on her SAK. The only time I use the blade is on my RAT-3, because of its epoxy coating... and i use the very rear of the edge near the choil. (That D2 doesn;t seem to mind though, so I could probably use it anywhere on the edge)

But back to Pit Man's thread........ I'm going to invest in a "real knife" for her. I'm torn between maybe a Mora like the boy has (but with a slightly shorter blade) or a Busse Full Battle Mistress, or something :D I like that youngsters knife collection! His beats mine!!!

No, the spine wont :(, but give the actual edge a try, down by the base of the blade. Also dont forget that angle will play a part aswell, Try at a steep angle.

The spine has to be 90 degrees, my sak saw spine throws sparks better then a hack saw blade.

I meant if he was using the Blade its self. unlesss im missreading your post.
Did you mean the blade its self has to be 90 degress or the saw spine, becuase the edge would work a bit better at a slightly diffrent angle.

At around 45 degrees the Edge of the blade will work the best.
90 degrees for the spine of the saw.

Super looking knife collection there young pit man!!. And apparently your Dad has taught you some good basic bush-craft skills as well. I also have an 11 year old son and a 10 year old daughter who have been taught the identical skills. Its nice to see our next generation learning and practicing these skills. You look like you are well on your way to becoming and expert at these life saving skills. You keep up the good work now.:) All the best to you, your Dad and your family!

Blessings,
Anthony

I'm pretty sure I ran that spine down at 90 degrees...even at about 100 degrees (forward to catch the edge)....several times. I'll try again tomorrow. Now the blade I haven;t tried, I almost never use an edge. But n the RAT3 I always angle it forward a little and it sparks fine. The Nimravus threw so much spark we could've cooked the eggs off it even with the black coating on the spine!

Sorry about the confusion, I meant the back edge of the spine has to be completely flat, the shoulder has to be a sharp 90 degree angle.
The spines of the rest of your sak tools are gently rounded and so won't throw a spark.

I love to see this, I cannot wait until my boys (3 & 1) are old enough to start with these skills.

So jealous of you having a son. I love my daughters, and they're not typical girlie girls. I'm the last Roy in my line too. So I gotta keep plugging till I get that boy.
