New Knife Existential Dread

Buy some apples, go to your favorite nearby spot in nature, and enjoy. Even better, if you have kids take them along. Repeat as often as possible until the knife has a glorious blue/purple patina and said existential dread is gone, replaced with good memories of using the knife. In my experience you will likely end up admiring the knife much more this way.

That being said, there's nothing wrong if it brings you more enjoyment to keep the knife pristine. Plenty of guys do that, and there's nothing wrong with that if it's what you like. There should be no dread involved, however, in a hobby; rather an escape.

I get a hesitant feeling, then I realize I should use them eventually, why wait to enjoy them? I like the above comment, make some memories. My most favorite ones are the ones that are used, especially ones used by family members in years past, still using them today makes me feel closer to them and a sense of history.

It’s mind over matter. Did you buy it to look at,
and sell again? Or did you buy it because it’s a knife you want to cut things with? If you buy a knife and tell yourself before it shows up that it’s going to be a knife you use, you’ll feel better about it. One good thing about GECs is they retain their value, so fear not. You’d get most of your money back.

"Simone, I never truly considered the existential implications of knife ownership previously."

"Oh, Jean-Paul, sometimes a knife is just a knife."

"Simone, don't get all Freudian on me."

I just scored a GEC and now I find myself afraid to use the knife. Do any of you guys suffer the same thing? Should I shelve the GEC or throw it in my pocket and use it? It's just so damn pretty!
Sort of. I have 2 knives I won’t use at work or in the woods or yard. A Spyderco Farid K2 and an Inkosi. If I didn’t have so many other knives I wouldn’t leave these in a drawer.

I have sort of cheated a bit too, I sometimes will get less expensive versions of ones I want to test out first, maybe different makes, then I wind up liking them so much, I keep them and use them. Then I don’t have to buy the more expensive ones. I have done this with the French knives l like.

Yes !

But I got tired of paying big money for knives I was reluctant to carry or use = vault queens .

So, I resolved to only buy what I would be comfortable to actually use and abuse if necessary .

I haven't been 100% successful , but close .

I still have a few I baby more than the others , but mostly those purchased before my resolution to use /carry everything .

Sometimes , you just have to force yourself to go ahead and use a knife just to get it over with .

Once used , it's not as hard to continue . Works for me . ;)
