New Knife Existential Dread

Buy some apples, go to your favorite nearby spot in nature, and enjoy. Even better, if you have kids take them along. Repeat as often as possible until the knife has a glorious blue/purple patina and said existential dread is gone, replaced with good memories of using the knife. In my experience you will likely end up admiring the knife much more this way.

That being said, there's nothing wrong if it brings you more enjoyment to keep the knife pristine. Plenty of guys do that, and there's nothing wrong with that if it's what you like. There should be no dread involved, however, in a hobby; rather an escape.
I found that pears give some of the brightest blue patina which has a nice contrast to purple gray I typically see from apples.

Lol, but it’s an honest question. He’s got one hell of a collection that is put away to accrue value, so I’m curious as to what he actually carries around.
He plans on taking them with him when he goes.

(Who knows, St. Peter might be a knife collector. Can you imagine the stuff he's picked up over the years?)

I usually get past the fear and loathing by forcing myself to sharpen a blade. Then it's no longer pristine. (But I have more than a few virginal knives in my collection as well. That's on me.)

This was why I capped my purchases at $150. More than that, and I feel like I have spent an irresponsible amount on something which is ultimately a cutting tool, and could get lost, stolen, or broken, no matter how careful I am.

Which are?…

I’ve seen you post for years that you don’t use any of your knives, so are you there chewing letters and packages open to avoid cutting stuff?

For letters, I use various typical office supply letter openers or a cheap paring knife that I also use in the kitchen.

For general use in the house and out and about, I use 1 of 5 SAKs. I also carry 5 cheap folders in each vehicle that I own that are mainly Kershaws or S&Ws. I also have 2 drawers full of over 25 carbon steel and S/S kitchen knives of varying size and quality that were either free because they were inherited from my parents or cheap because I bought them) for kitchen use. And I have 1 Gerber machete for the garden when shears or clippers are not sufficient.

And, I've got simple razor blade box cutters and utility knives scattered around the house to cut up boxes and other things with. I also have a huge supply of safety razor blades and utility knife blade on hand to replace the blades as needed.

These "knives" meet ALL of my ordinary cutting needs so that I do NOT have to "use" any of the knives in my collection for such mundane tasks. ;)

Do you mean to tell me that you've never experienced the joy of cutting with one of your beloved Spydercos?

That can't be the Case true.

I think I'm going to swoon.

Nope. Only some paper or thread when I was too lazy or in too much of a hurry to pull something cheaper out.

BTW, I just used my Hinderer XM18-3.5 to open a letter from the DMV at the PO today, if that makes you feel better.

Be careful where you land. LOL! ;)

That's not bothersome enough to me for an "ignore." Only real a-holes get that kind of treatment.

On the one hand I'm beaming with pride that I'm not a big enough a-hole to be put on ignore...oh wait, you can't put mods on ignore. There goes that theory.

On the other hand, I'm not sure that the Hinderer story has fully revived me from my frazzled state.

😂

PS: I just came back from the PO and it's time to open the mail I brought home w/my paring knife. LOL! ;)

I only used the Hinderer at the PO because I couldn't wait to see what the DMV sent me until I got home.

Speaking of "a-holes" and $150 caps, there's nothing like watching your brand new $500 INFI blade follow the grain...

Huh. Well there we have it, folks.

Man, I don’t know how you’re able to resist using all of that fine cutlery. I’d have 8-10 out on every table and use em for everything.

I've used and carried about 1/3 of my GECs, but don't have them firmly in categories. Some (usually Northfield, why I try to get Tidioutes) are so pretty I just stare at them! But most of them eventually get carried, sharpened, used etc. Not preserving them to sell, but for keeping. If a guy has fifty or a hundred knives it's hard to use them all. Especially for a city boy who opens Amazon boxes and cuts a few strings etc. I usually have two traditional knives with me at least, call it systems redundancy!

TMI?

I have a slightly different take on the original question and if it is a pretty knife then absolutely frame it and enjoy its beauty in its unused state. There are plany of inexpensive knives out there that are disposable. Use a cheap knife and if it breaks just go get another.

On the other hand there are a lot of people who think life is too short to use cheap knives. I'm one of them.
