Hello Everyone!

I wanted to open a fresh discussion about the Buck Vantage and what everyone thinks about a Vantage with upgraded materials. I'd love to see one, however, you blade centering nuts (I say it in love) will have a cow over the centering. The Vantage's inherent flaw is that it is quite often produced without perfect blade centering. I'd venture to say that out of 100 knives, you'll get 30 that are perfect.

So, my question. What is the big deal about blade centering and does that stop you from wanting a Vantage in your pocket?

If it is a big deal, which knife would you rather tinker with in another contest?

Yes to a custom Vantage! I love my Pro version but would be thrilled to see other options. Here's what I'd like to see:

-- Slicker flipping action. Maybe bearings in the pivot?
-- Blade options: Something flat ground for sure. I'd love to see a carbon steel offering, but that's probably not what most people are looking for.
-- Scales: Micarta! Or a high-grade custom wood option, like ironwood.
-- Liners: Titanium to lighten up the knife.

As for blade centering, it's not a big deal for me. A little off center has no effect on function and amounts to a "knife nerd" complaint, IMHO.

So glad you are considering this.

blade centering is at the bottom of my cares on a vantage. long as it doesnt rub the liners i dont really care as its a working knife not a collectible. for me anyways.

would love to see a 3.6" or 3.75" or 4" blade. a bigger version. upgrading materials for the cureent sizes of small and large doesnt do much for me. i also realize i am in the minority on blade size of a folder.

Vantage upgrade please. Doesn't have to be mechanical but some more multi color g10 like the blue black. Keep the black blade

Vantage please. I think it is a really under rated knife in their line up. Not a blade center focused guy so long as it isn't hitting the sides.

Some high end wood, custom pocket clip maybe? There were many with different wood handles early on which were nice and added some character. Iron wood maybe? I would prefer to not go the "tacticool" route. However, I know profit and the market drives those decisions.

I agree with different scale material, I'd even be happy with G10. Slightly larger flipper stud or ball bearings :), although mine opens pretty good which surprised me based on the flipper design.

Its a great knife. Seems the blade steels are covered with the pro version.

I'll be the kill-joy...

I love the Vantage! It's a great EDC without a doubt. But why gamble on a model that you have to ask whether centering is a real issue? So long as the blade isn't rubbing the liners, it's not a flaw. But when you look at folding knife for sale listings, most people mention centering, good or bad in their description. I'd hate to see a great model get upgrades and there be disappointment because centering isn't perfect.

I think it's silly to criticize a folder for how the blade appears in the stowed position. Isn't it more important how the parts fit in the open position?

What was the impact of blade-play on the Spitfires? How many went back to Buck?

How about something new(ish) in a fixed blade?
101 clip point with S30V & Elk
107 with S30V and elk or Micarta
Vanguard with S30V and Micarta
197 with user materials

I'm obviously partial to S30V and Micarta. :)

Perhaps an EDC fixed blade?

I'll go along with MT Pokt and say the Vanguard would be my choice. Preston

I think the Vantage is one of the best EDC knives Buck has! A pleasure to carry and a use! I've had a couple that the blades weren't centered on but were very easy to correct unlike the 110 I was able to fix them myself. I can say this none of them have had any blade play :D

I don't understand why the centering is even an issue, this has to be one of the most simple folders ever made?

Have you ever asked Buck why centering has ever been an issue? With this simple knife QC should be able to make sure it's not ever going to happen ;) don't know what could be done to improve the Vantage except the bearing setup like the Marksman and of course the many different scale options there is :D I like S30V

The older versions were simpler. The newer ones are no fun to take apart due to their construction.

Vantage fanboy here. I really like my Pro and it effectively sidelined a number of my other folders. I was one of those centering nuts, but now that I took a bunch of time to take apart my pro and tweak the liner lock and get it perfectly centered..... I don't think I'll ever stress about that again. It was much ado about nothing. As long as it's not rubbing at that price point, I'm going to leave them alone from now on.
