opinel is my vote...for $30 you can buy two or three depending on what size you get.
for woodsduty, i would say go larger, a #9 or #10.
both of mine came with a thin, dull edge. a quick sharpening fixed that though, and they sharpen up easily.
the blades are thin and nicely convex ground, so they cut well.
the handles are superbly comfortable, very nice and round. i had a hard time going back to a trapper after i carried my opinel for a while. everything else just seems really boxy.
and they're cheap, so you can afford to buy two and destruction test one so you know its limits...
they are very light too, since they are almost all wood.
one or two things i suggest you do when you get it though: pop off the locking ring with a pair of pliers and clean off the grease type stuff under there and apply a light coat of mineral oil or similar. the locking area will become far easier to move open and closed.
i haven't tried this, but might soon if the humidity keeps up-cut off the pivot pin and take the blade out. lightly sand the tang of the blade and the inside of the handle slot where the blade fits. this will mean that even if the wood swells, it won't pinch the blade too much. there there is the issue with putting in a new pivot, but not hard for a handy guy. the locking ring should hold the blade tight when open.
