New knives advise!

Hello there.

I am reading you guys a long time now, much longer than my join date says.

I could use your advise in order to purchase two new knives, both fixed blades! The thing is I have some criteria that can't be even bent so my limited knowledge of makers isn't helping me decide.

Here we go:

1. High carbon steel.
2. Drop-point blade.
3. Convex edge.
4. Uncoated.
5. As far as length goes, the small one should be 3" ±0.5" and for the large one I don't have a specific length in mind. Let's say somewhere around 6".
6. 3/32 - 3/16 blade thickness. The small one should be thinner than the large one.

I don't mind going custom but I would prefer if they were made by a bigger company since I will be able to get my hands on them easier and/or safer, since they will go through customs.
Both knives will be used. I don't do collections! I don't have a problem with natural materials for scales since I don't abuse my knives, I know how and can take care of them.
But since both will be users, presentation grade materials should better be avoided. If it actually is natural materials, it has to be as stable as possible.
Finally, I can spend as far as 350-400 $ for each, I wouldn't mind though paying less.

If you feel like some of my criteria could be altered, please explain why do you think so.

That's all I can think of right now. If you think you need more info, please ask for it.

Thanks in advance,
Tolis.

I should have told you that I wont be buying any Bark Rivers since I've read not so good reviews on them online about ugly chippings.
But the they have a shape I like a lot!

Thanks for getting back to be though!

Hi . these knives come as a pare their made buy A wright & sons of Sheffield UK . the handles come in stag or leather the sheath it's not good but you could get a custom one made . I know their clip point blades but take a look Sheffield shop and see what you think .

Black Jack knives is another option, I don't know where you heard that about Bark river's edge's chipping.

The good black Jack knives are made by Bark River.

But with those things you want I'd get a blackjack.

I would check out Hard edge Knives, he makes a great variety of high-carbon fixed blades that are user-grade and vary in size and blade style. I have a Squall of his, it's smaller than what you are looking for, but a good example of the work he does.

Ka-Bar Becker 14 for the small knife, Ritter MK 2 (aka Becker 12) for the bigger knife, or if not readily available either a BK 2 (although it is 1/4" thick) or a BK 10 (3/16" thick), which with some careful grinding can be readily made into a drop point. Stripping and convexing is a quite easy do-it-yourself as they have saber grinds. Awesome high carbon steel/warranty/customer service. Plus, with your spending cap you could buy 3 of each :D

I recommend a Becker or ESEE.

I really like the Becker BK 5 I won in a GAW here. The sheath has a built in sheath for the Becker BK13 to with it. Two birds with one stone.

I'd be happy with anything that comes out of Mike Stewart's shop. My collection includes two of his Marbles Campcrafts and a Fieldcraft in 52100 from his era there, and a Bark River Woodland Special in A2. Mike does some of the best heat treating around IMHO and I'd trust his blades anywhere. Never had any problem with edge chipping.

ESEE 3 with matching ESEE 6?

Tops Dakota drifter has a unique modified drop point, practical but stylish.

Tops Baja, BOB, or Scandi

CRKT Hoodwork is another one with a stand out styling and design, but still practical.

Buck Hood punk

Winklers are real nice, but a bit pricier. Same with Busse.

They're not all uncoated, but a coated finish can be removed (if you really like the knife). Just wanted to throw some solid options into the hat.

Thank you all for all the replies. I checked everyone you mentioned.

As far as go Bark Rivers, there are some threads here about such problems and some videos online.

Esee's are a strong contender already that need two mods in order to fulfill every criteria I have, stripping and convexing. I might go as far as etching the logo. Awesome warranty and price!

As I was checking the knives you mentioned I stumbled upon Ryan W knives. That Trinity Drop he does seems quite nice!

I also like Autine's wildlife knife if I could have a non damascus one. He is also based in Europe which is a big plus (customs and shipping cost).

And the search goes on. It's good that I don't need them as we speak and can take my time finding one that fits!

Thanks again!

Tolis.

I agree.

It seems to me that if a high carbon steel knife is uncoated as you ask, corrosion will be a problem. If you don't care about the coating I would buy a Kabar knife.

Fallkniven S1 + F1 ?

I can't say I don't like fallknivens. I have the F1 on my list but not the S1. On the upside for the S1 you upgrade to a hedgehog sheath :P
But that needs some planning first!
