New legislation to ban machetes in NYS

I just saw this and read the actual bill being proposed.....These are used as TOOLS! The other scary thing is there is no new definition listed so at what lenght will a fixed blade become machete? It is not defined.....I hope this dies in the Codes section as it should....

Just when you thought it couldn't get worse, this bozo steps in!

So I guess if the machetes are outlawed, those evil doers who want to kill people with them will just stay home.....:barf:

Just like all those cheese burgers causing heart disease....those evil burgers!

Perhaps people in NY should have to get licensed to buy bacon. I heard bacon is a killer! :jerkit:

What the heck is going on here!

They ban Al pastor then.

What machetes are those he's holding up?

State Sen. Tony Avella wants to ban machete possession in New York

EXCLUSIVE: Under Avella’s proposal, possessing a machete could lead up to a year in jail. He plans to introduce a bill to establish a ban, which is in response to an incident in July on Long Island where a man hacked a teenager to death.

The sale of machetes should be outlawed after several recent attacks, a Queens pol said Wednesday.

State Sen. Tony Avella plans to introduce a bill to ban the possession of the scary blades in New York.

“The fact that anyone can easily purchase this potentially lethal tool is just crazy,” he said.

Smaller knives such as switchblades and gravity knives are already banned and listed as deadly weapons under state law, but machetes are considered the same as butcher knives.

New Yorkers carrying those knives can be ticketed for a blade longer than 4 inches, an administrative code violation. They face up to 15 days in jail and a $300 fine.

Just wants his fifteen seconds of "fame"...what a moron
I wonder how many crimes are committed by machete wielding persons???

You mean to tell me that New York didn't already have a ban on machetes?
I'm somewhat surprised that NYC didn't; but much of NYS has land on which a machete is a functional tool. Unfortunately, the City politicos forget that (if they, in fact, ever knew it). Sadly, that proposal doesn't specify NYC...
Fingers crossed that common sense prevails; though, in my experience with such things, the spin is effective on the general populace (OMG, why does anybody need something like that).

He saw Halloween, shat himself at the image of Micheal Meyers and his <4 inch fixed blade, then ran to his political pedestal

Is that just a City proposal? The article simply says New York, which, to me, implies State.
Currently, according to the article (as posted at the start of this thread)
New Yorkers carrying those knives can be ticketed for a blade longer than 4 inches, an administrative code violation. They face up to 15 days in jail and a $300 fine.
The new proposal seems like overkill...a politico trying to make a career move.
Under Avella’s proposed legislation, the mere possession of a machete could lead to a year behind bars.

Considering the fact that it is NYC, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this piece of malodorous legislation passed with flying colors... :barf:

Much as I hate this type of legislation, if they keep it contained in the City; I won't gripe much. If it's a State thing...well, I'd happily turn over my CS Latin Machete. I don't like it much, anyway.

Not that I expect much thinking from politicians, as this abomination of proposed legislation demonstrates, but unless the law is written to specifically exempt manufacturers and distributors from the law, every employee at Kabar and Ontario will be violating the law just by making, sharpening, selling, packaging, or handling their own products, as will dealers such as Tomars.

This bill would effect the entire state of New York

The wording is fast and loose regarding exactly what a "Machete" is.

Here is some text from the bill:

This oversight is surprising given the common knowledge that machetes have often been used as weapons and are actually defined as such in Webster's dictionary - "Machete" - a large heavy knife used for cutting sugarcane and underbrush and as a weapon".

Notice that the only definition given is from the noted cutlery experts, the Webster's dictionary people, and that it's hardly a legal one in any way. No technical details such as blade length or thickness are specified. Under this silly logic the possession any "large, heavy knife" could become a felony. Better hide your fixed blades and hard-use folders. Which by the way is exactly what people like this toolaphobe who wrote this want. :thumbdn:

By the way, Is Knife Rights aware of this?

“He’d still be alive today if it wasn’t for a machete.”

Right. If machetes were illegal, the killer in question would've collected stamps, or Criterion Collection DVDs.

This is the biggest pile of...

This kind of $&#% makes want to vomit...

Just don't get me started! :grumpy::barf::mad:
