New Medford for My Two Month Old Collection

I just started getting into knives the last two months. I come from a firearms background...buying, selling and collecting pistols and rifles for 25 years. I guess I needed a new expensive hobby that I can't afford either :)

The only knife I owned was a Microtech Ultratech that I bought in 2010. I carried it, but never really used it. I just sold it a couple of days ago. I picked up a Combat Troodon a year ago that I have up for sale right now. I just bought them because I though they were cool. I didn't give any serious thought as to whether they would actually be useful or not.

After a shooting buddy of mine, who is really into knives, started getting me interested in knives, I spent a few months doing some research. Mainly looking through the different sections of knives for sale on bladehq.com. I found myself particularly attracted to over-built knives. The Medford Praetorian defined that look for me. So I bought one. You can see it and my subsequent acquisitions below.

Clearly I like Medford knives. I see a lot of folks on here are not big fans. All that really matters is if I like them anyway. Lots of folks on here say they don't cut well, they are to thick etc. I'll tell you, I get a bunch of those FedEx Small and Medium boxes on a daily basis at my office. The pull tab you are supposed to pull to open them never works. It always rips out. I pull out my Praetorian or 187F and it slices the end of those boxes off like a hot knife through butter. About ten times easier than any box cutter I have in my office or warehouse. To each their own.

Here are my acquisitions over the last two months:

First is the new Praetorian that just showed up today. It has a black G10 scale on the front and a blue anodized titanium slab on the back. That blue slab seems to be a pretty unique for a G10 Praetorian. Looks awesome in person. Plus I really wanted a Drop Point Praetorian because I already had the Tanto, and needed one of both :)

These are the first three Medfords I bought that started it all

Then I grabbed this ZT 0561 because I really wanted a nice tan flipper (I really need to shoot a better pic than that, but the baby is sleeping. Yes I am 47 and have a 16 month old. And a hot younger wife too ;)

I also wanted to have a fixed blade in the arsenal for when I go out training with my ex-military training buddies. I was really drawn to this Southern Grind Jackal:

Unless I can sell it, this is my collector knife. It is way too nice to even consider carrying.

Great collection. I really like Medford knives too. I'm looking to get a Praetorian next. Love my TFF-1.

Nice collection, I suggest using the ANAX it is relatively "Common" for a custom and I very much enjoy using mine only difference is I have the carbon fiber one. The finish on your ANAX will also be very user friendly and Tony will take care of you with any service issue.

I totally understand what you are saying. It just looks like a piece of art to me. The thought of putting it to a $1 cardboard box makes me cringe. Somehow my Medford's, though almost as expensive, look like they need to eat the cardboard box. I actually have the Anax up for sale here. If I can't get $625 for it, I will keep it. Or maybe try to trade it for a Praetorian with a stonewash tanto blade :) I'm sure I am going to want one of those soon.

That's a helluva collection for someone just getting into knives. Nothing wrong with that, it just goes against the usual progression most of us went through of starting out with cheap stuff and working our way up. :D:thumbup::cool:

Nice collection, I too like Medfords; been carrying a certain Arktika for better part of a week now - I very much appreciate you selling me that one.

Congrats on a very nice collection,, and on the baby and wife :D

Like you said, you like the knife and that's all that matters.

Exactly, there seems to be a lot of bashing on the forum over certain brands and particular knives. People need to realize that most people buy a knife because they like it. In the end that is all that matters. Knives are much like art to me, taste plays a big role in the purchasing process. I like over-built knives. That is probably why I just ordered this Grindhouse knife. It is over-built like a Medford, but more elegant.

Grindhouse Mini FOK I just ordered:

That's a heck of a start on a knife collection. I can only imagine what your gun safe looks like.

Oh yeah, that a whole other story. I guess I haven't taken too many group shots, but here's a little peek :)

Nice collection.
I walked into my local Tactical/Gear store last night. They got a shipment from Medford in October. They have approx. 20+ of his knives. I had the opportunity to fondle and drool over a few models I haven't seen in person before. I have a TFF-1 and am well versed on that one. The Praetorian was lighter than I expected, lighter it felt than my TFF-1. The micro Praetorian seemed tiny and it's the same price as the full size version. The model that really impressed me was the Marauder. Holy cow! it was a beast. I didn't really look at the 187 model because they dont interest me. I found the one I wanted, just hope it's still there when I'm ready to buy.

Did they have an Arktika?

Making up for starting late huh?
Not referring to your little lump of baby gold, but your knives. Those are all very nice.
I handled all of his knives at a custom show. Cant say they feel like knives in hand, but they are machined oh so well. I just started laughing at the praetorianan when I picked up. Told him I would have loved this thing when I was 12. He gave me a look lol, then I had a few questions for him.

If I could get one in the future it would be the general! That is a gorgeous comfortable knife. Unlike the rest I handled.

Holy Guns Harrish!
That is awesome. Looking at getting something for the wife and I after we are licensed soon.
Any recommendation for something with an easy trigger pull and low kick back for my wife. She can kick my butt but no way does she have man hands.

Sorry to jump in, but I've got a new Arktika listed on this forum for $750 if you happened to be interested...

No they didn't.

I was asking because I'm so enamored with the one I just bought. Not just the beastly size, but the ergo's and design are amazing. Strider-like in some grips, but for me so much more. Encased stop-pin design is brilliant, pivot on mine is now melted butter, I just flatout love this knife.

Can you post a pic of the encased stop pin. Id love to see what you mean. Only if you have time, sorry to ask.
I like how on the general the stop pins on the blade are hidden into the handle once you open it. Really cool feature.
Does any body have some pics of a general next to his others?

The Gen and the Midi Marauder are the two I like.
