New MUST HAVE P.S.K. item

i know that some athletes use honey instead of 'energy gel' (kind of like energy bars, but in syrup form instead so that it absorbs faster). i've used the stuff before and it comes in little packets, but you can buy it in bulk too and fill up your own 'energy gel flasks' (tiny squeezable water bottles). i'd think that if you looked for these flasks in some running or biking stores, you'd find them useful for storing honey as well.

They are made in China, I would be leary of them, who knows if they have lead or other chemical contaminents in them.

We all got a lot of throwing out to do as half our lives is made in China, whether you know it or not.

The antibiotic component explains why honey - despite its high sugar content - can be left unrefrigerated indefinitely without supporting mold colonies.

Back in the olden days when I was a kid My grandma cured all kinds of ills with honey or lemons or both. Many people used to put a little honey in the baby bottles with the warm milk. Add cayenne pepper to the above items and you can cure or kill about anything.:D

I'd like to reiterate my point that giving raw unprocessed honey (and honestly any honey that has been opened for some amount of time or is not boiled directly before ingestion) should not be given to infants under a year old.

it may inhibit mold, but bacteria and insecticides present in the local flowers may still be present.

I still have a gallon glass jug of tupelo honey I bottled in 1995. Since that time I've emptied one jug and half emptied another. Except for some darkening, it is as good as the day I bottled it. And they don't spray pesticides on tupelo trees in Florida.

Its the sugar content not antibiotic properties although there is some in honey. The same reason syrups and other very high sugar content items even sugar itself is permenently bacteria free.

Honey was found with the dead sea scrolls over 2000 years old and was still edible just crystalized is what I am told.

I guess we better start throwing things out then. But seriously, after what we saw with the toys, would you trust anything made there foe long term food storage. I wouldn't.

Just a thought...What about using the firestraw packaging method for carrying Honey around in either in a PSK or in your hiking pack. That way too you could control the portion amount; some small 1"-2" ones I think would be just about perfect for 1st aid and or most flavoring needs, and maybe 3"-4" for an energy booster.

Honey is excellent, I've known about its virtues for many years. It is the most complete food source, and has so many uses that no other food has.

But I seriously can't stand the way it tastes. I can eat it if I have to. But I sure ain't smiling.

I guess I'm weird.

There was study while back that proved that honey had no medicinal value at all. Some of your stories are great but honey is not a cure all or a disinfectant. It has no more value than regular sugar. :)

BS,

It gases off peroxide which kills bacteria. Unpasturized honey of certain plant origin does indeed have medicinal properties. It is specific to a particular honey. Manuka
