Wanted to share this with you guys who dont make it over to the RAT forum, or were unaware of this new product.

The RAT firekit.

I put together a little essentials kit tht I can wear around my neck or put in my pocket.

Has a spy capsule with water tabs, a LED light, Whistle, striker, compass, fishing kit, and a small spool of fishing line. Still have room in the firekit for something, might add a couple pj cotton balls. This is just a little basics kit I will wear around my neck, or hang from the rear view.....

nice kit, looks quite functional. i have somthing similar in mind for a few essentials, but mine is going to be for the pocket.

Looks great, I was just checking those out on newgraham before I saw your post !

Very well made, and the rod is replaceable. Passed my 30min submersion test w/o leaking a drop!!

J, did yours come with the compass?

I found them at KnifeCenter yesterday. I was impressed. Unfortunately, KnifeCenter has a disclaimer that the compass is not included. The pics with the Brunton are Pre Production Models.

No thats a brunton I had laying around. I have 12 on the way to me right now. Dry ones that Jeff Randall reccomended that will replace it.

If you pick one up, lemme know and I will send you one. They are only available in 12 packs. I am no longer a fan of liquid compass.

That is one cool firesteel kit.

I just checked out the RAT website and it claims that the compass is not included but any 20mm compass can be epoxied in.

That whole kit is pretty cool too J.

Thanks, yea it no come with it, but it is resessed to accept any 20mm compass. My brunton snapped in, no epoxy needed. This is good kit guys. For those of you who have not used the misch metal steel before, you need to look into them. Very cool.

This is a very well made product, fills the hand, and is very high quality machining....

Hey Jake how about a list of where you bought each piece of kit? Thanks for doing the legwork!

The Firekit came from knivesshipfree, paracord from local surplus store, the spycapsule is a countycomm peanut lighter with the lighter removed, the squeeze LED I got from Doc Canada, but any photon will do, I believe countycomm carries them too. ACR whistle came from Basspro, they have Fox whistles too. Water tabs from the pay it forward thread, compass from basspro, hooks and sinkers from my tackle box, spool was in my drawer, dont remember where it came from, but sewing bobbins from wally world will work. The striker is a modded hacksaw blade. I can get a nice strike with it.

I have always been a fan of the survival necklace. Started when my wife bought me one of Ranger Ricks survival necklaces a few years ago.

Heres the plan for it as soon as I can get the gear. I am gonna replace the paracord with a dogtag chain inside a plastic tube so I can have drinking straw, and breakaway ability. I am also gonna replace the hacksaw with one of those polished dog tags with a sharpened edge to use as a striker and signal mirror if need be. Then IMO it will be perfect.

The thing I like about a necklace based kit, is the ease of throwing it on, and forgeting it untill you need it. If it is on my rearview, it is always a visable reminder to throw it on when I get out of the truck where I am venturing off into the woods.

Plus, all items are visable, thus making them more serviceable then my sealed psk. which is easy to forget about. However it is still carried, because my doc canada special is the best one I have ever owned, and sized perfect. Nothing wrong with gear redundancy, but if it is accidentally left behind(not likely) this is on the rear view, ready to go!

Great looking neck kit. I made one a few months back and it hangs right next the front door of my house. Lot's times I'm just heading out for a brief adventure and I'll throw it on when I wouldn't take the time to get any of my other gear.

Excellent! Thanks Jake. Hey, where does a guy find a breakaway like the one you mentioned?

Any dog tag/light chain will work man. You can get lengths at any hardware store.

Ranger Ricks necklace actually uses one of them wire saws inside a length of tubing for the necklace. If I could find one worth a damn, I would go that route, but I think you would have to cut it out if you needed it, making the tube worthless. Unless you went with a bigger diameter tube. Hmm. Gears are turnin now!!!

So you see what Im sayin.... They are handy!!

I wouldn't say they are handy - maybe neck-y. ;)

How do you replace the flint in the RAT capsule?

That is a sweet capsule - exactly the execution I was looking to do - at the price I think it should be sold for. It looks like it is already being done.
