New or Used, What Do You Buy?

Just wondering how you guys prefer to buy your knives? Do you prefer the discounted price of buying used (not talking secondary mark up on rare knives)? Or do you prefer the security in buying a new knife if it's an option?

I personally prefer to buy my knives new whenever I can. Though I'm sure if a grail came up on the exchange for the right price and I couldn't find it new I would pick it up. Even then, I'd probably do a lot of searching to find the knife I wanted new from a dealer.

I like them new, here on the exchange, it just depends if I want the knife, if so I pay the secondary market price. If it's used, depends on the condition and who is selling.

I'll buy new whenever possible, especially if found on the exchange for a good price. The only brand that I refuse to buy new from a dealer is Benchmade for obvious reasons. I'll only buy those on the secondary market. If there is a knife that I'm interested in trying out, ie new to me blade steel, unique locking system, flavor of the month, etc. I'll buy a user to try out if I can find it at a discounted price. I guess in summary, I'll make a purchase using any of the available avenues. I'm not married to either one or the other.

I always check the Exchange first, on the grounds that I'd happily know the money from sale was going toward the seller's purchase of their grail knife. Brand new or like new is usually my preference, but if it's a knife I'm buying as a user, a little preexisting wear and tear is OK. I have yet to get burned on a knife purchase here by a seller who inaccurately described something, which is more than I can say for eBay.

After that, there are a couple of website that I check before a general online search, specifically due to things like free shipping, seriously good deals on clearance items, etc.

I usually buy new but I wanted to try Strider without spending too much so I bought it used and was glad I did.

New or used, doesn't really matter to me. All the used knives I've bought here on the exchange were great prices and in great shape.

I have the new knife disease and many people have benefited from my affliction.

Anybody want a nice Strider SMF DGG? :-)

I usually go used. If you find the right balance of price to condition, which is not that difficult, it's absolutely worth it in my opinion.

I nearly always buy a folder advertised "NIB" or as-new in box from the Exchange. I just got in one Sage3 CF that is still enclosed in its original sealed plastic wrapper. And, I saved a ton of money. I am SELDOM dissatisfied. I will sometimes buy "NEW" from a dealer if I'm gifting the item.
If you ever feel that you've been "had," return the knife for a refund. I have done that also, but only a few times in several hundred transactions.
Even a good guy sometimes sells a knife with defects of which he is unaware. He/she is very likely to take it back, given the nature of this forum and the Feedback ratings which are ALL-IMPORTANT for any kind of repeat sales.
Most folks wear white-hats. Just check the seller's feedback BEFORE you buy his item.

I generally buy new simply because there's not much choice of used knives here so it's often the only way getting what I want and importing from abroad isn't an option.

Almost always used, I'm going to make it a user anyway so why pay a premium for NIB?

Usually high end knives hold their value so if you buy a user and don't beat on it you can get your money back if you choose to sell it.

This pretty much sums up my stance, as well.

I've picked up plenty of used stuff that's still in excellent condition, and I've been completely happy with my purchases. That's the great thing about the exchange: most folks on there are honest people.

Of course, I have no qualms hitting up a dealer and paying "brand new" prices. The added confidence of a new knife is a good thing!

I try to buy used if they are LNIB... I only go new if the prices are on special/clearance at (or even below) what the used market charges. I do that for both my collection and gifts.

I almost always buy used, I can get like new or slightly used knives for a fraction of what I would pay if they were new. I figure I am going to use the knife when I get it anyway, so why pay more than I need to.

Mixed bag for me. I will say that most of what I purchased on the exchange I ended up selling. I did pick up one of my favorite knives on the exchange though--Spyderco Manix 2 CTS-XHP

99% of the time I try to buy NIB -- but there have been a few through the years that I could not resist that said like new in the box or opened a letter with it ~~ ya know what I mean.!

For the Collection or Accumulation, I would never buy a used knife. Second-hand sure, but not used.

I have bought some used knives though, good-condition vintage knives at local sales that were purchased to carry.

Since I buy knives no longer made and from factories/companies no longer open, I have to buy used. I'll not buy a knive I won't carry and use. An added benefit is these knives (Ulster, Schrade, Camillus, etc.) can often be had cheaper now than when they were first produced.
