New or Used, What Do You Buy?

Meh, doesn't matter to me. The marks I add will just mingle with the ones already there. That said, everything I've bought in the past couple years has been new, or so "like new" I couldn't tell the difference.

I love buying used, and most of them wind up like new in condition anyway. ive saved a ton of money buying used or lightly carried. its only going to get carried anyway so theres not much difference.Im a sucker for a bargain.

it depends on what I am buying. If its under $200 I usually buy new. But over that and I am usually trying to save as much money on something as possible. In those cases I am trying to find LNIB or BNIB at a discount. Safe queens and such. Its definitely not a science though. It seems these days when buying used most peoples idea of what Brand new is is much different than mine. It seems like some people can drop a knife off a cliff and for some reason still think its minty fresh. And just as bad most of the times when i buy a knife that is "new" from the manufacturer I want to call them with a coupon code for pearl vision as their quality control department obviously needs some new optical enhancement.

I will buy a new buck, but most others i get used because i dont agree with some knife brand owners and dont want my money going to them.

My purchase depend on my budget. Being married, 3 kids, home owner, bills ect sometimes new is just out of the question. The exchange here is a great place to shop for knives. I have had a few great experiences with dealing with people on this forum and have ended up with some really awesome knives! That being said, sometimes the one we want isn't available here and getting one new in store is great:thumbup: And when I do I like to buy from BF supporting dealers ;)

New most of the time, I'm only apt to buy used if what I'm buying is no longer available new or if it's something I am sorta interested in, don't like it enough to pay "new" price for, but may be willing to pay a significantly reduced used price.

New, always. Same with cars. Hopefully houses too. You never know what the previous owner has done. Some hidden problems are nasty enough to significantly reduce the value of your purchases.

I have accepted used knives as gifts but so far, I've only bought new. I prefer new because I've seen some knives pretty badly gnawed up from someone who doesn't know how to sharpen a blade.

I'll buy new or used, but won't pay a premium because it's new. Too many out there think that NIB is something special with a Delica, sorry but with five million of them I'm not giving you an extra ten bucks. I don't sell my knives for similar reasons- I find too many people forget that these are knives, and all of mine have cut something at some time! I don't put my knives under a microscope, and don't wish to deal with those who do, so even my knife trading has stopped for the most part. I look at the knife and materials, with moderate use- not if it's ever been used as a knife. Therefore I rarely pay for name either- I'm not a fanboy of any company so I don't fawn and "must have" over every new knife, so that decreases my need to find at any cost, because fanboy demand has outgrown the value I put into these knives. Give me a good deal I'll trade or buy new, give me a better one used and I'll treat you in kind! I understand collecting and wanting to keep things pristine, but that's just not why I collect knives. I do it for the joy in using and appreciating the different nuances of a fine tool! To each their own, and for all of the "new only" collectors, feel free to grab all of the 100 year old $20 Slipjoints you can, I will appreciate each one you send me!!

I'll buy both, my recent example is I bought a used Emerson a little while back to use/try, and I liked it so much about two weeks later I sprung for a new one (different model though). Originally my interest in Emerson's came from a very slightly used Emerson/Kershaw colab obtained here. As far as the exchange any used knife I've purchased was exactly as described, no complaints here.
