New Queen Sodbuster in Linen Micarta has arrived!

Just ordered one of the new ones so I can compare the differences. Mike over at Collectorsknives.net has these in stock again. He said that they are from the most recent run but he hasn't compared them to the last run to see if there are differences. I'm going to assume they have the changes that Ste stated but will find out in a few days, I'll report and include side by side pics!

Trevor, sorry for the delay. Here are some pics of mine:

With my Opi #6 and Steel Warrior wharncliffe whittler for comparison:

Color of the micarta didn't come out great, I think this one is the best representation of the color. You can also see the drop between the handle/top end of the backspring and the back of the blade from this angle:

Thanks for the pics Ste! That shield is larger and imo looks better. I see what you mean about the micarta color, looks sort of worn in the middle, I kind of like it! I'll be sure to post up some comparison pics of the first run vs. second run when she arrives next week. Thanks!

I think making it that bit bigger has allowed them to make a very clean job on the shield. It would be interesting to now just how they make these, if they are stamped or if they are using a more modern technique. Anyone know?

My second run Queen Linen Micarta arrived from Mike over at Collectorsknives.net yesterday and I managed to get a few comparison pics this morning. Ste was spot on that the shield is larger and the Linen Micarata is not as refined. It seems that there is more variation in the coloring throughout the micarta and appears lighter than the first run. Something that is also different is handle shape, the first run was thicker and more rounded, much like it's country cousin kin. The second run is thinner and more squared , similar to the German Eye brand Sobusters. I personally prefer the rounded version since it feels better in my hand but they are both nice knives and the thinner second run will ride the pocket a little better. Pics below.

Thanks for the comparison shots. Aside from the differences in the covers, how is the rest of the knife?

It has good walk and talk, nice solid lockup with no blade wobble and this came sharp enough to give me a bald spot on my arm:D. The blade is not perfectly centered but it does not rub the liners either. When the blade is open the backspring protrudes slightly, though nothing that bothers me I've read that this bothers some people. My opinion of the knife is high, I really like it and for the $48 I picked it up for I think it's a good deal considering you are getting D2 and micarta scales.

Thanks! I may have to get one. Micarta and D2. Killer combination. Makes my mouth water.

I concur with Trevor. The second generation looks just like the German Eye-brand. Definitely stout; sharpened up great and definitely a keeper. That being said, I think I would prefer the rounder first generation as I think that shape is the most comfortable for a serious user. D2 and micarta, they were meant for each other!

Really curious, is the spine rounded on these? Rounded like a Sebenza, if you've seen one.

That knife looks like everything I want, and if the spine is rounded I'd have a *very* hard time not buying one. :)

Edit- man those REALLY look rounded in the pics... I think I might be in love!

I've only ever felt revulsion for the name "country cousin" .It conjours (for me anyway) some giant bucktoothed hayseed holding a pitchfork whilst picking their nose.
Not so with this knife-D2 and that micarta is pure class - I reallly like this one.
cheers.

Strigamort, they're pretty smooth, no hard edges so I would consider them rounded.

Thanks! Yeah, they definitely look it, the more I study the pics.

I'm getting tired of doing my own (doing the Case now) so I'm going to have to get one of those.

Looks like an excellent way to try d2.:)

Add another fan to the 70 club. I agree Trevytrev-Queen got this one right. Mine is a "second run" and the blade is dead on center. It has a first rate F&F, but...it came complete with the traditional Queen edge. I'm getting out the stones and the sharpie.

Thanks for the comparison pics, Trev. I did wonder about the handle shape on mine compared to the original, I thought it looked squarer but don't have any complaints about it in hand. Update on the edge... apparently I spoke too soon. The grind is not level and when I tried to sharpen it the angles were way off. At a 20 degree angle I could only touch the shoulder of the edge bevel on one side and not get anywhere near the cutting edge. :p Been trying to work out the edge bevel and it is finally taking something like an edge... it will actually cut paper instead of just tearing it as I push blunt metal through it. I think the edge towards the tip still needs quite a bit of work though.

The one I have is first Gen. Came with the blade centered, no wobble and shaving sharp. Micarta done very well. However, the walk is more of a stumble and the talk is but a mumble. The weakest backspring of any Queen I have.
Love it anyway.

I've been looking at these for way to long and "had" to get one- from Mike at collectorknives (thanks!)

A few things I didn't like: flat scales with uneven beveled edges, overly smooth mirror polishing inside the thumb nick, downward angled tip when open. I did some work:

-rounded the scales with 100 then 180 then 220grit sandpaper
-filed the kick to seat the tip
-filed the backstop of the blade so the blade spine is more in line with the spring when open.
-etched inside the thumbnail pull with ferric chloride to add some grittiness

The new guy is pictured below with an old relative.

I have been jonesing for Queen made by the new owners and this one looks like a nice one to try out. It has been added to... "THE LIST". :D
Thanks for posting, trevytrev.

They are really moving in the right direction!
