New RC-4!

Now, I do appreciate the effort. And I do like that one better. But I wish that was a full flat grind on that one. Especially if its gonna be a 1/4" spine.

But I do like the choil less design there.

I guess I'll just continue to make my own. Thats what the Batac tought me. And its whats keeping me from pulling the trigger on a RC-4.

In regards to using a saw blade to throw sparks... It doesn't make too much sense to me to carry additional pieces of equipment when what I already have with me will do the job just fine. I'm a "less is more" type of guy, so anything I can carry that performs well at many tasks is the way to go. I know a small piece of saw blade wouldn't really be cumbersome or get in the way, but why carry it when my knife works just fine? Just seems like something else to fumble with...

I try to use this way of thinking in regards to all of my equipment/supplies. One sturdy product that can do many different jobs very well seems like the most efficient method to me. To each his own!

So far I have tried striking a ferro rod with my RAT-7 and it does pretty good in spite of the coating... I guess it will come off eventually all by itself, no need to remove it!

I try to do it as well with the spine of my other knives just to prove it can be done but so far nothing beats a piece of metal saw. They throw sparks like there is no tomorrow!

The coating on the RAT-7 by Ontario is water color thin compared to the heavier duty coating of the RC knives.

The RC-4 is a nice-looking knife!

The blade length and shape are about perfect for what I need and a choil adds a lot of versatility.

For what it is worth, I couldn't get the RC-4 ridged spine to throw sparks this morning.

It was just sliding of the firesteel from the coating. I was using a pretty worn firesteel which already had its protective coating scraped off. The action was starting to put some wear on the knife coating so I stopped at that point (only about 3 scrapes). I'm sure I could have kept at in until the coating came off and would have thrown sparks fine, but I don't really want to do that on my 2 day old knife and that is why I have my little scraper attached to the firesteel anyhow.

I filed the coating off of a portion of the spine of my RC-4, but thats all. I dont want to take the entire coating off as it protects the steel from corrosion. Not sure why you would take the coating off of the entire blade... can't think of any logical reason to do that.

Well, lots of blades have no coating, I like to see the bare metal myself. Stripping the coating is a pretty common mod, actually.
In the case of my RAT 5 the coating was pretty rough and caused friction when I cut things.

Ah, ok, makes sense. Yeah this is my first blade with such a coating, though I havent noticed friction while cutting so far...
