New SAK Advice

Well, looks like I've got my anniversary gift list ready to go, now I just need to copy that message and give it to my wife!

I'm with Jacknife and many others in that I believe the Soldier (and Cadet) is an amazing deal.
I believe it is the best bang-for-the-buck knife I have ever purchased.
I used one extensively during some home renovation, and it was invaluable.

You can get the Soldier from felinevet for $21.50 shipped to your front door.

The Cadet II is like a mini-Recruit (Recruits are also very nice, and are only $12 from WalMart).
I have a regular Cadet, which is similar, but has a nail file instead of small blade. The Cadets are very pocketable, but sturdy as hell.

Another vote for the Victorinox Spartan, best SAK ever made..

.. I also have to add that you can get a pre-owned Spartan delivered from sosak online for $5. I bought one for a modification project and it looked brand new.

stevekt,

Excellent site this sosak!. Thanks for that.

I 'd have to throw my vote in for the farmer. I really like the alox scales, and since its a gift your wife can add a little something with an engraving. Like I said any of the alox scaled SAK's are nice but what puts the farmer over the top for me is the saw. That little saw is damn handy, you won't realise just how handy until you need it.

Go to Sosak, on the left hand side choose 'felinevet's shop', once there, again on the left hand side you'll see categories of SAKs. Previously owned Vics and Wengers are there. He is an awesome fellow... buy with confidence.

Like Jackknife,, I have given my Red scaled SAK (Recruit) away, and am now a proud devotee of Alox. I own both the Standard Issue (identical to the Soldier, except with a bale), and the Cadet. I was going to use the SI for my normal everyday use, and the Cadet for dressy occasions, but I have to be honest with you. The Cadet keeps making it's way into my pocket!! I feel more comfortable with the 84 MM size blade. I love it's slim profile, which at first was a concern of mine (would I be able to get a good grip on it during heavy cutting), but which has since been erased from my mind. I've modded it abit. I've sharpened the file tip, so it now works as an awl, and I filed the little screwdriver head on the can opener off. It got bent up on a particularly stubborn screw a while back, so I have since removed it. I sharpened the screwdriver head on the bottle opener into more of a chisel. Since I always have my Leatherman on me as well, I don't need screwdrivers on my Cadet. Now, for me, it's perfect!!

#1 - Farmer (Alox + saw + lanyard or key ring)
#2 - Pioneer (Alox + lanyard or key ring)
#3 - Soldier (Alox)

If you think you must have some pliers with you, buy a 4WR or 5WR Visegrip. The 4WR is a bit small to my way of thinking, so I prefer the 5WR. You may prefer the 4. The number is the length in inches. The WR part is important. It refers to the jaw shape and wire cutting capability. Matched with an Alox SAK the small Visegrip makes an unbeatable combination.

You can't really go wrong, but some of my favorites are the farmer, fieldmaster and hiker,if you want a simple absolutely rugged tool I'd go with the farmer or other large alox models,if you want somthing that has more blades and functions the good ole "plastic" handled ones are exellent as well, and the thin blades cut really well! And another:thumbup: for felinevetshop, great service and thier pre owned vics are a real bargain!

Dr. Mudd,
I have to agree, mostly, with your assessment. For me though, my #1 would be the Pioneer....but if they made an Alox "Farmer II" with a scissor in the place of the saw, it would be my favorite. Kind of like an Alox Super Tinker.

The Huntsman has a useful array of tools. I've had mine for about 25 years, used it hard (my edc and only knife for much of that time), and it is still ready for more. My older Huntsman is small (84mm). I think the current version is a little bigger.

Not to add further confusion but I gotta add another to your list...Tinker. Just the regular, two layer, red one. Been my prime SAK choice since 1984.
