New Scagel knife...

I got my Fruitport in yesterday, and I am very, very pleased with it. While some folks may take issue with the "historical inaccuracy" of the knife, they are overlooking what it really is, which is a GEC/ Bark River hybrid.

I disagree. I don't think it's being overlooked.

While it may be a fine knife (and I'm certainly not contesting that), what's not being overlooked is that it could be called anything else but it's not...I agree with you, it's a GEC/Bark River hybrid (and not a Scagel design or pattern) and so some other moniker might be more fitting. It certainly wouldn't change the quality of the knife. (A rose by any other name...)

Personally, I'd prefer to see it stand on its own merits as a knife and design and take the "Scagel" out of it. Let those who feel it is a fitting tribute to the late maker come to that conclusion on their own.

Presuming that folks are missing the point seems to be missing the point in my view.

However, this has been gone over before and there's no real need to reopen the matter here. I just really wanted to address your presumption of folks "overlooking" the facts (such as they are).

Carry on...

I agree that the branding is somewhat unfortunate. The point I was trying to make was that the knives really are quite nice, and the lack of historical accuracy shouldn't scare folks away from such a snazzy piece of kit. Although I totally understand how it could.

I guess I had not totally thought through the ethical implications. I apologize for any presumptuousness on my part. I too would like to see the Scagel name associated with things that are more, well, "Scagel". I believe Derrick intends future releases to be more along those lines.

The GEC/ Bark River- hybrid thing is very cool though, and I'd like to see it continue.

Thanks, Andy. I very much appreciate your reply.:thumbup:

MAN a Bark/Gec collaboration makes me drool!
derrick those loke great, like the 4,5" scagel

is the 4,5" lockback convex too? but it's a Northwoods right?

Got one of the bone handled clippoints over here in the UK recently and I must say it's a cracking knife. The fit and finish are first class, the convexed blade is as sharp as you like and in my view it looks and feels just right. As was said in this thread earlier, I don't know why there aren't more plain bone handles around..

This is a quality bit of kit. Everything I was hoping it would be - and more.

Cheers,

Trevor.

Yes, the lockback is a Northwoods and is not convex ground.

The next few knives will be fixed blades. They are being made by Bark River.

really looking forward to those fixed blade models! will you be offering one of the fixed with the folder blade in handle?
thanks!

Given the topic, I thought I throw in a link to my review on the Scagel fixed medium hunter knife. I really can't attest anything to the historical accuracy of this design, but I really have come to appreciate the merits of this knife as a fixed blade bushcrafter. It really is excellent in ergonomics and utility.
