New scales for my RAM

Thanks for the compliments. I'm probably going to use some lightly-figured cocobolo I have for the next scales. The color is very similar to that of the Padauk, but cocobolo is much more durable. After that, I'm not sure. When I get back to my real shop, (I'm on vacation at my family's house), I might try some tulipwood, snakewood, or maybe some Asian ebony. The sky's the limit if I decide to go with a stabilized wood.

With this great work you're doing(will be doing), you could upgrade your membership
and sell these. You would make your money back with just a couple of sets. ;)

Again, great job!!

+1!

I see some pretty nice wood available on this site too, I can just see how nice some of those pieces would look on a RAM, or anything else really! I've bee looking to get some gun grips made, and I like being able to see the exact wood before I purchase it.

Thanks again for the encouragement, guys. I just finished my first full set. Again out of Padauk.

I'm not at my shop, so the process is not as smooth as it could be, but it's working out. I first blank out the pieces and flatten them. I start at about 1/8" thickness. I've been backing the padauk with some CA to reduce chip-out and increase durability. I then trace the pattern and drill the holes and countersinks, (this is tough with the crappy press I'm using). I then use the belt sander to rough shape them followed by lots of hand sanding. The indent for the lock is put in by hand. I then flatten the faces and smooth the edges. Finally, a coat of tung oil finishes it.

The wood scales are thicker and smoother than the G10 but they feel really good in hand. I have to sacrifice some durability, but they do look good.

I'm planning on making more of these. I think I'm going to try blackwood with gemstone inlays next. I just have to figure out what pattern would look best.

Phillip

(I think I'm going to have to make a lumber run soon)

Here are the pics. The padauk is interesting in that it changes color quickly. The orange turns to a darker red in a few days. That's the reason the color doesn't match in the photos.

I think I could go ahead and make some extra sets. I'll have to get my hands on some more lumber (or wait till August when I go back home). All I have here is a bit more Padauk, some cocobolo (good stuff) and a block of blackwood. Is there any wood that you have interest in? I prefer working with the denser woods (rosewood, ebony, pink ivory, etc).

i would have to purchase another ram and maybe see some of your stock to determine what would suit me. also, your denser woods are fine with me :)

PM sent firebert.

The finished scales look fantastic!
Looking forward to seeing some other versions!

Also a general note for everyone, please don't discuss firebert making these scales to sell in this thread any more, we don't want him getting an infraction because we encouraged him to sell them.

When he's ready I'm sure he'll post in the appropriate forum.
In the meantime enjoy the great work he's done.

And that concludes this public service announcement, back to the regularly scheduled thread...
